Refs: | Pout, Hmph Face - Meaning, Examples in Anime, How to Say in Japanese https://www.japanesewithanime.com/2020/05/pouting.html If you've never looked up the verb "to pout" in a dictionary, you're probably as surprised as I was to find out that the dictionary doesn't include the way the word is most used in the anime fandom. ほっぺを膨らませる In anime, most of the time the word "pout" is used toward a character, it doesn't mean the character is "pushing their lips forward," but, instead, "puffing their cheeks." The term fukurettsura ふくれっ面 specifically refers to this so-called "pouting" face with cheeks puffed out. Meaning is explicitly about the facial expression with the cheeks: daijs: 頰をふくらませた不機嫌な顔つき。 sankoku: 不平、不満で、ほおがふくれたように見える顔。ふくれつら https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/pout to push the lower lip forward to show you are annoyed, or to push both lips forward in a sexually attractive way: https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=ふくれっ面 ふくれっ面 pout pouty [pouting] face sulky face Not a lot of examples, but basically "pout" or "pouting(face)". The one "sullen" gloss looks like an awkward J->E translation. https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/ふくれっ面 |
|
Comments: | Above all, see image search: "ふくれっ面" Even "pout" is not quite correct, (and the first ref comments on this), because this indicates a very particular facial expression. One reverso instance even says "pout-like". We don't appear to have a word for this in English, so "pout" is often used in its place. Image search is consistent with the cheek-puffing definitions. For me, "sullen" is a somewhat more severe state than ふくれっ面 seems to imply. I think the simplest thing to do is drop the additional glosses (sullen, sulky,...), which say nothing about the *manner* in which the expression is performed. If needed, we can add an [expl] or comment that says "as a signed of annoyance/anger/etc.". See しかめっ面 (frown; scowl; grimace). I don't think "look"/"face"/"expression" are necessary. の usage seems just to be "(someone) in the state of having a pouting face". ふくれっ面の 1486 ふくれっ面のまま 111 ふくれっ面の女の子 101 The xref might be a bad idea. 口を尖らせる is "to pout" in keeping with the English definition. But it's explicitly not synonymous. more of a "strongly related" term. Was really tempted to include "hmph face"(given by the ref.). Certainly the English-language images match, but I don't know how well understood this would be. |

Comments: | Tried and checking with a native speaker but she hadn't heard of the word. It's probably ざけ rather than じゃけ - out of 8 words on daijs ending in 鮭, 7 are read ざけ and one is read さけ (but it comes with an "also -ざけ" note). On the other hand, daijr lists 塩鮭 as being read both -ざけ and -じゃ け. Not sure where I stand inclusion-wise, it's not a very common word and we don't have a definite source for the reading. |
