it is also mentioned in the etymology of the name of this ramen chain

i think it's fine to leave 古潭 here as 'also written as...'. (potentially as a headword as ateji?)

  Comments:
I don't quite get what it's supposed to be mean though. Is
"darling" referring to the adjective or the noun? If it's
the adjective, then the 2nd sense is essentially just
"lovely," but then I think the question is whether an
"ironic sense" that is the very opposite of the "actual
sense" is really necessary to include? Isn't it a bit like
adding "(used ironically) stupid" to 頭がいい?
2. A* 2012-11-08 06:35:25  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>

It was put in about 5 years ago by Kanji Haitani, a native speaker who was active for a while on the project. I knew him quite well - he was a retired professor who did a lot of translation. I'm sure he was correct.

I want to make the case for removing all mentions of "short scale" and "long scale"
for numbers, and only presenting the short scale. In every English-speaking
country in the world, modern English uses the short scale. Since most people are
not familiar with terms "short scale" and "long scale", the practical effect of
including both is that people who look up the word 一兆 will not know whether it
means one billion or one trillion without counting the 0's in the numerical
representation. Getting rid of the long scale representation will make JMdict more
reflective of modern English, and easier to understand.

If this change is accepted, I'll go ahead and change all the other entries as well.

Idiomatic English/European is “See Naples and die” (or “vedi Napoli e poi muori” for Italian), and this is given in dictionaries.

(Dunno best way to tag these shades of translations; I’ve tagged the literal one as such though.)

I’ve also removed the [obsc] – I have heard this phrase used (in history class), and it hasn’t been flagged as particularly obscure; it seems to be the well-known phrase associated with 日光市.

* Add note and kanji (non-JIS)
Is there a way to have the character 髙 itself in here? (Now that non-JIS is acceptable, with care.)
* I’ve added back the note "髙 as variant of 高" which becomes the still logical " as variant of 高" without 髙 (admittedly looks redundant without 髙, but not misleading).
* Alternatively (or in addition?), we could put 髙 into the kanji field itself. This is what’s done over at 1884150 しんにょう for the road radical, which includes:
之繞;辶;辵;⻌
This has the advantage of degrading very gracefully, as it’s just absent if not supported.
The note does make the 髙/高 connection explicit, but is perhaps not necessary if 髙 is actually in the kanji field.
Same issue at 2739450 立つ崎 﨑 so probably best to be consistent.
(Came up when chatting with friend, when I learned that she had this form of the character in her family – she did use the term.)

3. A* 2012-10-30 23:15:29  Francis
  Comments:
I agree with your comments about the difficulty of tying it down. The native speaker says it and understands it without even being able to explain it. A little bit like the old comment from a scholar [forgotten the name] who said, "I know exactly what "time" is until I have to explain it in any meaningful detail."

I am wondering if the following would be acceptable to you. If the searcher, like me, searches for the bit at the end of a sentence which reads "なのか" and comes up with nothing then that is a problem and leaves much doubt about what to do next.

If you amended the entry for "なの" to include "なのか", then even though there may be many shades of grey which cannot be covered, the general concept would be understood. So for example:-

なの (exp) (1) (fem) (col) (at sentence-end with falling intonation) used to make an assertion; (2) (fem) (col) (at sentence-end with rising intonation) used to ask a question; often followed by か (なのか)

Then if in time anyone comes up with a better notion it can be revisited, but at least for the time the novice will find an acceptable answer. If however anyone concluded that "なのか" definitely means something else other than stated above, then that someone should not have too much difficulty in providing you with an adequate submission, so to speak!
2. A* 2012-10-30 10:31:44  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
At sentence end, this is (just) なの+か, and probably doesn't warrant an entry. But it's all over the place, and I doubt a useful coherent entry can be constructed.
I'll leave it a few more days, but if nothing useful amerges, I'll delete it.
1. A* 2012-10-07 20:24:18  Francis
  Comments:
I have searched around for this in the same way that I did for "なのだ". You now have "なのだ" on the site and I thought that you may like to have "なのか" as a suffix included as well. It picks up masses of Google hits. My best finds for meaning meaning came up on Google, for example:-

なぜ私は私なのか」(英:Why am I me ?)[WIKIPEDIA]

どこなのか」. → Where is ∼?

You have the following as a sentence end use:-

なの (exp) (1) (fem) (col) (at sentence-end with falling intonation) used to make an assertion; (2) (fem) (col) (at sentence-end with rising intonation) used to ask a question.

However, this does not help when the "なのか" is mid sentence.

If my searches have come up with the wrong result, perhaps your experts can give the correct meaning so that an entry is available to help the searchers.
