Comments: | This entry has an interesting history. It began pre-2000 as: 元に [もとに] /(exp) (uk) under the supervision of/on the basis of/ In 2007 Rene changed it to の下に, quoting Daijr/s for the kanji and noting that it was "more idiomatic" that way. Shortly afterwards Paul Blay added の許に and split the senses. I've come around to the view that this is probably adequately covered by 2004390 (下/許/もと). I've reindexed that sentence to the 元/もと sense as Robin suggested, and I'll touch up 2004390 a little. |

Comments: | As of this year (2023), Japanese law has a single crime for rape that covers various circumstances. Before that, there was a distinction between "rape involving violence or threat" and "incapacitated rape". According to the kokugos, 暴行 refers to the former category. In US federal law, the terminology is "by force or threat". Maybe just "by force" is sufficient. |

Comments: | I assume the intended nuance from "(violent)" might be similar to the typically-understood distinction between "assault" and "aggravated assault"? Of course the action in question is inherently violent, but we cannot deny that there is nevertheless a significant difference in *character* between the stereotypical "jumped in an alley" scenario versus the (tragically) more common "taken advantage of by someone you trust" scenario... Is there anyone familiar with how these distinctions are drawn in practice in, for example, Japanese law? What an unpleasant topic. |

Comments: | Thanks for the explanation. I don't have any objections to using the field tags to mean specific terminology or jargon rather than categorization, but until now I had no idea that was the intent. (I finally understand why タンク isn't [mil]). |
|
17. | A* 2022-06-02 00:45:24 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | We typically only use field tags for terminology (i.e. technical or special terms). So 積分 gets a math tag but 数学者 does not. It has been suggested in the past that we expand the use of field tags to include all field-related terms but I'm not sure there's much enthusiasm for that idea. I'm quite happy with the current policy, which mirrors that of the JEs and English dictionaries. Deciding what counts as "terminology" isn't an exact science, but simple A+B terms like 麻雀クラブ or 麻雀打ち wouldn't usually be tagged. |
|
16. | A* 2022-06-01 12:57:36 Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I thought the purpose of field tags was at least partially to serve as metadata. For example, you can search "#mahj" on jisho.org to bring up a list of all mahjong vocabulary. If we're going to remove tags because they look redundant, should we also remove the tag from 麻雀牌 ("mahjong tile"), 雀荘 ("mahjong parlour; mahjong parlor"), 雀卓 ("mahjong table"), etc? We're actually kind of inconsistent about this right now. In addition to 麻雀, similar entries like 麻雀打ち and 麻雀クラブ also don't have the tag. |

|
Comments: | I wonder if there is an issue here that we didn't used to charge men with criminal assault over brawling as much as we do today, and that "criminal assault" has lost an older implied connotation. ... Came here to "correct" what I thought was an oversight, and saw that this was discussed and decided on deliberately. If you see this term on jisho.org, it looks like: (crime of) rape; criminal assault Law ("Law" in gray). While the goal of "people will infer sexual connotations from the first term" is understandable, [law] appears affixed to the second term. It's possible to read this as "colloquially used for [rape], but as a legal matter this is the general term for any criminal assault". If you search "criminal assault" in jmdict, this is currently the *only* matching entry, which also increases the chance of misunderstanding. I don't agree that "criminal assault" is limited to an understood euphemistic reference for rape. If you'd asked me out of the blue, "what is criminal assault", I would have said "someone attacks/injures another in a fight and got arrested/charged." "rape" would not have entered my mind. If you say "the woman was criminally assaulted by the male perpetrator", inferences would obviously be made. But "charged with criminal assault" is also what you'll get if one man punches another in a bar fight. I was going to just insert "sexual" in the middle of "criminal assault", but I think Tom's point from 2016 was well made. From a legal perspective "rape" in English (as far as I can see) requires penetration, as does the legal term 強姦罪. "Sexual assault" does not. I don't see the value of downgrading the term as a gloss. (people can do that on their own if they want) And given that 強姦罪 *requires* penetration, "criminal assault" seems like a massive understatement. I don't know what the other J-E dictionary motivations was here. If eijiro and ルミナス exclusively glossed this as "criminal assault", that seems way off, and it's hard to imagine a reason other than not wanting to include sensitive English vocabulary in their dictionary. For comparison, the jmdictdb entries for レイプ and 強姦 are already glossed: レイプ rape; sexual assault 強姦 rape; sexual assault In this case, as a matter of [law], this would appear to need to be *** criminal sexual assault (including penetration) I'm not advocating for or against such a gloss. That's a matter of everyone's sensibilities. The value of including "criminal assault" (especially when we don't even have entry in jmdictdb for the actual legal equivalent), seems to me to be outweighed by the more serious issues attached to this term. Translating 強姦罪 as "criminal assault" loses a whole lot of information, and blindly translating "criminal assault" as 強姦罪 could represent a massive error in modern use. |

Also, the original gloss "talking to oneself" can work as a translation for this term in some contexts, but it probably doesn't fit as a dictionary gloss. Here's an example: どうしよー… あっ、こっちの話だから、気にしないで! What to do... Oh, I'm just talking to myself, don't mind me! |

Comments: | It should have [nokanji]; that is the purpose of [nokanji]. If this reading is of Japanese origin (and I'm nearly certain that it is), then there's no difference between 三色同順[さんしょくどうじゅん,サンショクドウジュン(nokanji)] and any of our animal names like 鴨[かも,カモ(nokanji)]. - The only time [nokanji] should be omitted for katakana is when the word is of foreign origin, which makes katakana the "correct" way to write it in kana. |

9. | A* 2012-10-20 06:01:48 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | well... I think シモチャ should be either marked with [ik] or [nokanji]. If the case is being made that it is used on its own (I get 103 results for -"下家" "シモチャ" on bing), then it should be nokanji, like for animal species, etc., but if not, it should be [ik], like the らーめん reading in the ramen entry. Even if the all-katakana denotation doesn't go against mahjong conventions, it does go against general Japanese kana usage conventions. |

8. | A* 2012-10-20 05:43:46 Paul Upchurch <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Following Jim's ordering from 上家 for シモチャ;しもチャ. The problem with シャーチャ is that it's telling people that that's an actual, used pronunciation in Japanese for this term. But according to all other sources and what I've seen of actual use, シャーチャ in a mahjong context is 西家 every time. Including シャーチャ in this entry as a regular reading is at the very least misleading. How about this: since シモチャ/しもチャ is technically [lsrc=chi/p:], we split off シャーチャ into a separate entry with [lsrc=chi:][obsc] and a cross-reference to here, since its sources are nikk (not the best source for mahjong) and approximately 1 Google hit. |

Since mahjong is a game played with three other people (上家, 下家, and 対面), maybe a reference to 対面 is appropriate too. |
