Comments: | but does the fact that it's a 季語 really mean that the word itself means spring? I looked through a list of flowers and every single one I checked was tagged as a 季語 in daijs - 日 回り, すみれ,クレン、 桃, ジンチョウゲ, ヒヤシンス, 桜, カスミソウ, カーネーシ ョン, 梔子, 百合, 朝顔, 柊,福寿草. I looked at a few fish entries and most of them too had such tags ((鮭,秋刀魚,アジ,うなぎ). Even words like "アイスクリーム" and "熊" have 季語 tags in both daijs and daijr. I think that if we're going to acknowledge their meaning/mood in haiku, it should be through tags like in daij/nikk rather than by adding additional senses to each and every flower and fish. |

Comments: | As a haiku non-reader, I've never been 100% clear on 季語 indicators in dictionaries myself, but I think I agree with Marcus. The [季]春 means that it is associated with spring, but it does not mean that it can actually be used in place of the word for "spring"; they're just words that are used to give the reader a sense of the season. Although I could be wrong about this. However, for example, I don't think a haiku could include these lines to say you want to drink the spring rain: 恋猫の雨、飲みたいよ == In any case, I don't recall any of our other 季語 having a separate sense for the season with which they are associated. |

He remained mute and silent. 彼女は皿の上にうつむいて黙々と食べた. She bowed her head over her plate and ate in silence. The xref to 黙然 is because they are similar and related. |

Comments: | I'm not sure this needs to be an entry. It's commonly used with する, which makes it a regular A+B construction, and our second sense of 激しい is "extreme; intense; fierce; strong". Judging by recent usage, it's just colloquial, not slang. Also, the gloss "strong agreement" suggests that it's a noun phrase, but without する it's an exclamation ("I strongly agree!"); with する it means "to strongly agree". Given the 激しい and 同意 entries, I don't think this is especially useful. |

Comments: | Rene rejected this saying "standard application of ~度 with no idiomatic meaning in either language, not particularly useful for e-j, and not found in any standard reference. i don't see the need" __ I just think this entry obviously deserves to be included so I felt the need to resubmit it for further consideration. __ First of all, there's the fact that the use of it is obviously widespread, from the hits. Just on google news it gets 77 results (and google news search results only stretch one month back). On twitter search, I count 12 instances in just the last hour. It also occurs relatively frequently in more formal settings (see the ac.jp, go.jp results above). I think words that are this common deserve a place in the dictionary whether or not they are a simple "度", "的", or whatever constructions. __ "no idiomatic meaning in either language" - obviously it has an idiomatic meaning in Japanese, because this word exists and is frequently used. "level of commitment" in English is also actually fairly idiomatic (19,500,000 results). the word is often used romantically ("彼の本気度" 821k "男の本気 度" 1,150,000 "彼女の本気度" 782k). __ it is a pretty standard application of -度 but it's not 100% straightforward. The word (in its common usage) does explicitly not mean "angle, temperature, scale, strength (of alcohol), amount of times" of "sanctity" or "truth." It's helpful to point out exactly which of the possible meanings it has. __ Jim has previously accepted "成功度" which is only in eij and has considerably less hits (306k). |

Comments: | These meanings are all listed as archaisms, but I wonder if that's correct. ”いけん” is also used as a conversational form of いけない -- from what I can tell, used only when talking to one's social inferiors, and mostly by men. But it's more of a verb form than a word and applies to all verbs (e.g., できん for できない) so I don't know if it should appear as a meaning. On a related note, I came to this entry as I was trying to find a definition of せん, which it turns out is that conversational (superior, masculine) form of しない -- I'd not seen that before (私の名前など気にせんでいい - never mind what my name is). Again, though, I don't know if it merits its own entry because it's just a verb form (although one that is not included in the verb conjugation table for する). But from a user point of view, it would have been nice to find it in the JMDICT :-) Perhaps it is something that could be added to the verb conjugation table instead? |

Comments: | I am not sure in which of the Englisch countries "natural health professional" is a recognized profession, but i happen to know that it has been such for a long time in Germany, were the term for such a professional is "Heilpraktiker", and for that reason i think it might be useful to include the German term. |
