《stock phrase said when someone comes home》 ▶ welcome home
|
6. | A 2023-10-02 01:12:30 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I feel It's worthwhile to explain it's an everyday phrase in Japanese, which can't be said of "welcome home" in English. |
|
5. | A* 2023-10-01 23:37:18 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Is the note needed? Wiktionary describes it as a "stock phrase", which I think is a better description. |

Comments: | In the text which I was reading it uses "キャンヴァス" for canvas. I checked around and it seems to get the odd 30k Google hits [not many compared to the main entry above]. Weblio includes it, so maybe you would consider adding it to the above options. You also have the following on site:- キャンヴァス (n) canvas; canvass; JWN-02953673-n キャンヴァス (n) Canvas; WI1 I did not want to try making a separate entry because it seems better for the searcher to have the options in one place; should you choose to add it. |

Comments: | I don't think "(I'm fine) thank you" is a great gloss. Although it is the usual translation for "おかげさまで元気です", it doesn't mean "thank you for asking". See sense 2 of daijr's definition. I think we should split this into two senses. |

Comments: | Scott, exactly! That's why i requested to have it checked, since it seemed unbelievable... Now, why did this item come up at all? Because 覆って appeared in a text i was checking and neither "Translate words" nor "Word Search" gave any hint that there is such a verb as "覆う", of which "覆って" could be an oblique form. See my comment under 覆う. :-) |

Comments: | Very good observation by René. All of the other entries mentioned by Hendrik seem to have to do with おおう. I find it strange that くつがえる, to overthrow, could have anything to do with "to be clad in". I think that we should generally be cautious of adding completely new senses to fairly common words when none of the several Japanese dictionaries mention them. |

Comments: | Already has a good xref. [rare] = don't use if you have no reason to. Interesting comments on the old forked entry about being told explicitly to use this form, I wonder what the specific rationale ended up being in that case. 3 hits on all of wikipedia. My guess is historic legal/technical phrasing. One of the three wikipedia references was to "Kyoto and Osaka serial robbery-murder case" using the murder weapon: ステンレス製包丁(刃体の長さ約16.9 cm)[注 2]、警察用ニューナンブ回転弾倉式拳銃[1](38口径)[2] the weapon itself has a wikipedia page: ニューナンブM60 https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/ニューナンブM60 On its own page, it is simply called a 回転式拳銃. 回転弾倉式拳銃 does not appear. Maybe 回転弾倉式拳銃 carries some news-reportery "gravitas" along with it... |

|
Comments: | The entire definition in daijisen is 2 「風樹の嘆」に同じ。 This is not consistent across all dictionaries, so I went with the "particularly" option. But, given the daijisen entry, I think the derivation is probably from 風樹の嘆 backwards to 風樹, rather than the other way around (as it appears before this edit). I think the swaying trees are tied up in some sense of melancholy or regret. |

Filial obligation is the obligation of children to defer to parental wishes and meet a parent’s needs. This role not only includes contact with parents, having shared living arrangements, and providing routine care, but also involves providing physical, informational, and emotional support and financial help, especially when parents reach old age. This responsibility also includes more comprehensive efforts to ensure a parent’s safety, health, emotional well-being, sociability, and continued integration in society through contact with the outside world (Schorr 1960; Caro 2014; Whyte 2004). |
|
Comments: | Article seems to match Rene's comments from back in 2010. Suggested [see=] is a slightly more popular-looking kotowaza listed as a related-expression in the reference article. In particular, the linked expression is more literal, and might provide some insight on the thought-process behind this expression. I *never* know what dictionary term glossed with "filial" really means, since "filial piety" and "filial responsibility" (at least in my experience) are not so ingrained in western culture. So, I've gone ahead and tried for a more relatable gloss as well, but feel free to edit/drop it. For me "properly appreciating", in the western sense, would include things like "visiting, keeping in touch with, making sure they were well cared for", etc. "Doing what you were supposed to do when they were alive, and now they're gone". I think that's the right idea... If the second gloss is kept, I think there is a meaningful gap between "appreciating" and "properly appreciating", with the latter encompassing the thought "I may have done some things, but I should have done more". Like Rene, I think, it's probably less about "active" mistreatment, and more about passive neglect. |

Comments: | When in doubt, go with consistency I suppose... The following all have glosses of "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree": この母にしてこの子あり この親にしてこの子あり 瓜の蔓に茄子はならぬ 蛙の子は蛙 "the apple doesn't fall", following google's rough estimates, is 5~10x more common than either variant previously here. I get that we generally avoid contractions, but in this case it appears to be idiomatic. I read the past discussion on wording. This is one of these idiom common-to-uncommon mismatches where we'd arguably be better off giving a meaning "children take after their parents", and offering no analogous idiom whatsover(let alone two minor variants). This mapping leads to this kind of silliness: https://twitter.com/joyokanji/status/843862108731187200 "In Jp, “The apple never falls far from the tree” becomes 狐の子は頬白 (fox pups have white cheeks). " Except not really, because this expression seems to border on nonexistent in Japanese. |
