Comments: | i'm going to rip through Jim's list here: http://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/Entries_Under_Development Most amendments will be uncontroversial, so I'm going to self-approve so we don't get bogged down. This one however, should be deleted, I think. 98 hits inc. those from edict and we already have both words in the dictionary. |

7. | A* 2024-03-23 04:01:39 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Thanks for the submission. I really think that in this case the decision we made in 2012 to avoid attempting to classify the usage into transitive/intransitive groupings and set up senses accordingly was the right one. I think the previous sense split based on the core meanings was more appropriate. I'll put it back that way, and add "to rejoice". |

Comments: | Proposals 1: Classify [1], [2] and [3] as transitive, intransitive and *transitive respectively. Reasoning: While the strict classification of the verb as either transitive or ambitransitive differs across the Japanese sources that do explicitly make that demarcation, this should cover all grounds. *This one might have reason to remain neutral. 2: Further translation of [2]: to rejoice. Translation supported by both GG5 and JWN. 3: Inversion of [1] and [2]. Reasoning: Firstly, of the three referents that did state transitivity: 1 was transitive, 1 was ambitransitive and 1 was intransitive; however, even the one that said intransitive still used example sentences with を. Out of those of the remainder which did not: 2 suggest either ambitransitive or transitive based on use of を in example sentences and transitive constructions in all but one of definitions across both. GG5 did use example sentences with を but lacks definitions in Japanese. And the last, JWN, uses transitive structures for the definitions but has no example sentences. Based on the above I would say that the overwhelming majority of instances tends to either transitivity or ambitransivity, with only one clearly supporting exclusive intransitivity. Secondly, there seems to be no circumstance under which a supposedly intransitive variant cannot be interpreted as a transitive verb with an omitted object. Thirdly, If this is true then assuming transitivity will still deliver you the same semantic content of what would be the counterpart, but the same is not true of the opposite, therefore the former takes precedence over the latter. Lastly, the previous three points when joined not only seem to indicate a preference for the transitive hypothesis but may also substantiate forsaking the intransitive hypothesis entirely. |

7. | A* 2018-11-28 22:16:31 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Gerund glosses can be helpful but I don't think they add anything in this case. A learner will have no trouble translating "彼はアメリカに入国した" as "He entered America" from the gloss "entry into a country". GG5, Eijro, etc. are aimed primarily at Japanese speakers (i.e. English learners) so it's helpful to have similar glosses in different forms. We don't really have to do that in JMdict. |

Comments: | I guess I am "disappearing" the 戟 kanji form, but it sure seems to deserve it. Long-story-short on the rest: 刺激 means "irritating" in the skin-response-to-chemicals sense, but pretty much nothing else, and definitely not "annoying". This term is widely misused by English speakers(this unadorned gloss predates jmdictdb), and I think needs some kind of clarification. ==== I've spent a while looking at this entry, and 刺激性. Wordreference seems to have it figured out. Under "irritation" in the E->J direction, where there are many potential glosses, 刺激 is limited to (cause discomfort to part of body)/(身体の一部). irritate⇒ vtr (annoy) (人) ~をイライラさせる、怒らせる、いら立たせる 他動 (身体の一部) ~を刺激する、炎症を起させる 他動 ex. This sweater's a bit irritating if you wear it next to your skin. Under 刺激 they list: irritation n (skin reaction) That seems a bit narrow. You can 刺激 any tissue of the body I think(lungs, eyes, nose, etc.). The wikipedia entry for 刺激性 is all about chemical irritants. 刺激性's #1 use is for irritation of the body (skin, eyes, nose, lungs, etc.). 刺激性 as 刺激 + 性 for senses[2] and [3] here is comparatively quite rare. The unadorned gloss of irritation has, I think, lead to a lot of poor translations. Just a handful of the many bad "examples" on reverso: Filter packs screen out offensive and irritating Web pages. フィルターパックは攻撃的で刺激性のWebページをふるい落とす。 I have never in my life met someone so irritating. 私は刺激性の誰かに会ったことがない私の人生を持っている。 Please help me to solve this irritating issue by suggesting an optimum solution. ...刺激性の問題... It is very irritating as you cannot watch your favorite video peacefully. あなたが好きなビデオを平和的に見ることができないので、とても刺激的です。 and on and on.... https://context.reverso.net/翻訳/英語-日本語/irritating On that list of examples, 刺激性の問題 legitimately exists, but only as "the problem of(skin) irritants". (not "an annoying problem") 皮膚刺激性の問題も事実上ない https://fams-skin.com/famsbook/famsbook-3621/ I'm open to any other ideas for clarification. |

Comments: | Reordering glosses. I don't think we need a separate noun sense. Noun usage is really uncommon (there are no examples in the JEs or kokugos). Also, "crank" is not correct; there's no "その人" meaning in the kokugos. That Tanaka sentence is not a direct translation. 変屈 is so obscure I think we can drop it. |

Comments: | I approved the change proposed by Robin, but I note that GG5 leads with noun glosses and of the two Tanaka sentences using the term, one uses the noun: 彼のような偏屈を理解するには一生かかるよ。 It will take you a whole lifetime to understand a crank like him. Also Eijiro has one gloss. This may be an occasion where we have both. |

Comments: | Just to be specific. This is not the frame attached to the building into which the door / window is set. It is the frame that is part of the door / window which provides the structural strength to that object. Maybe that's obvious in "door frame" but it wasn't obvious to me. |

Comments: | It's a fair point. GG5 has a combined entry for 尖らす and尖らせる (both transitive), and 口を尖らせる gets nearly 10 times as many hits as 口を尖らす. I'll think about this, and I'll also add an example using 口を尖らせる. |

Comments: | I have not altered the above, but I am picking up that the usage is likely to be "口を尖らせる; 口をとがらせる(くちをとがら)" as much as the above. Google search seems to show more hits for causability as opposed to the plain verb. Perhaps the two could be combined in one entry. Or, maybe, one should just accept that the plain verb is the basis. However, if causability is the natural idiom then it is as much the idiom as the plain verb. |

I think that something can be a noun in Japanese yet an expression in English (simply because no equivalent noun may express the same idea). The POS should in this case be "noun"." I replied: "Well, I do think the stated PoS and the English gloss should agree as far as possible. That's why I don't like a PoS of "n" and a gloss that starts "to ....". I change them to a participle, etc. for that reason. While I agree that what may be a single word in one language may be several in another, I added: "A test I apply was suggested by Bart Mathais (ex Japanese professor at UofHawaii). He said "if you can't say XXXが ..., it's not a noun. That seems to apply very well to sense 2 of 天ぬき. I couldn't envisage 天ぬきが... for that sense. That sense of 天ぬき is, of course, a bit of a play on words. I'd imagine it used in passages like "それは天ぬきと言う場合...". We agreed to raise this as a discussion point for this entry. |
