Comments: | There is a separate entry http://www.edrdg.org/jmdictdb/cgi-bin/entr.py?svc=jmdict&sid=&q=2270030.1 that is a 'redirect' entry pointing to here. Presumably that was done because 乃 is going to be confusing to many people learning Japanese (heck, probably a bunch of people who _are_ Japanese as well ;-) I suggest that instead the kanji headword should be moved from this (main) entry to the 'redirect' entry. 国語 dictionaries typically won't have an entry for 乃, but have の without a kanji headword. NOTE: I can't actually remove the kanji headword 乃 until the x-ref pointing here is removed. |

Comments: | The present definition no. 2 reads: [2][suf] superior to (a professional) This is an abbreviated form of 玄人跣; 玄人はだし, for which there is already an entry (http://www.aa.tufs.ac.jp/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi?1E). The abbreviated form is not so common, so if it is going to be repeated here, I think it should be in the form of a link to the 玄人跣; 玄人はだし page. Also, the definition is not easy to grasp. It should read "superior in ability or achievement to a professional." |

Comments: | I added "service of process" and deleted "serving (a summons)" because a summons is not the only kind of legal notice that can be delivered in the case of notification of legal proceedings. The more blanket term "service of process" is more correct. |

Comments: | Just to be specific. This is not the frame attached to the building into which the door / window is set. It is the frame that is part of the door / window which provides the structural strength to that object. Maybe that's obvious in "door frame" but it wasn't obvious to me. |

Comments: | Jim has expressed a preference for it as hiragana-katakana. It's been sitting here as a proposal forever, so I suggest we approve it as hiragana-katakana (like the vast majority of other species that have kanji names). If we decide to go the katakana-hiragana route, there will have to be a batch conversion, and that will take care of this entry anyway. |

Comments: | Oops. I only meant to suggest a rejection, I didn't mean to actually reject it, and I didn't know that what was written would disappear from the log for this entry. I'll re-add Jim Rose's changes here for someone else to comment on. ***** In his submission, Jim made the following comment: I have found support that 燕魚 (ツバメウオ) is Platax teira. 三日月燕魚 is ミカヅキツバメウオ which is Platax boersii. But, that said, 燕 is a kind of bird... which makes me wonder if the Japanese experienced confusion due to the term "batfish", which is really just one genus of the spadefish family. They certainly do not fly... "batfish" is confusing actually. Its also used for a type of benthic deepwater fish who walks on its bent fins and lacks a swim bladder. The bent fin-legs resemble bat wings. Very nasty ugly looking fish that looks nothing at all like a spadefish. Also the Katakana now leads, no?**** I replied: *****I believe katakana still comes second. Then in wwwjdic, the [uk] tag signals that a kana reading is to be displayed ~before~ the kanji. Because a katakana reading is also present, katakana becomes the headword for display purposes. That was my understanding of Jim's last email on the subject. At least sticking to that would make the dictionary more consistent, because almost all of the many species that I've added over the past four years have come directly from dictionaries, and therefore they all have kanji headwords. I've always added a [uk] and placed hiragana before katakana. So unless there's a batch conversion to flip all of those entries around, I think it should stay hiragana-katakana. (And I think that makes more sense from a dictionary standpoint anyway.)***** |

Comments: | NOTE: incomplete entry. Explanation: i can understand from a given context what this term means, but since i have not found it in any of the dictionaries i have access to, i have very cautiously offered English meanings, hoping (trusting) that others will expand this entry as needed (perhaps GG5 has something? i don't have that dictionary). For example, with sense 1 i suspect that colloquial terms like "to pile up", "to stuff into", etc., could apply in some situations, as well... As regards sense 2, no English entry found for it either, but given sense 1 one should not require a dictionary to understand that this term can also be used in the context of data/information transfer, even though most Japanese use katakana-English here. |

Comments: | To the extent that we provide glosses, and not definitions, it seems the original GG5 gloss was correct for the [abbr] entry:"junmai sake". Sake types are translated into English with the original Japanese terminology. daijs also very clearly gives two senses, neither of which is an [abbr]. Minimally 純米 appears in 4 common sake-related compounds, behaving like [adj-f] in all of them: Junmai Daiginjō-shu (純米大吟醸酒) Junmai Ginjō-shu (純米吟醸酒) Tokubetsu Junmai-shu (特別純米酒) Junmai-shu (純米酒, Pure rice) daijs also identifies vinegar: 純米酢 15222 here's some others that came up in the ngrams: 純米焼酎 (shōchū made from rice, not potatoes) 純米にごり酒 pure-rice nigorizake etc. I don't see how we skip an [adj-f] entry for this. "without the use of distilled alcohol" is not redundant, because distilled alcohol (or brewer's alcohol) can be made with only rice, koji, and water. daijs explicitly gives the same restriction. |

Comments: | See comments on 純米酒 and 純米. We're a glossing dictionary. This is translated into English overwhelmingly as "junmai ginjō sake". xref, if approved, should be [see=純米[2]]. We've already used an [xref] to explain ginjō. If we use an [xref] for 純米, we can forgo the [expl] entirely (my preference). Otherwise, the "proper" [expl] would seem to be: [expl] high-quality sake made from only white rice milled to 60%, kōji, and water, brewed by low temperature fermentation without the use of distilled alcohol This could come up in other terms that use 純米 and/or 吟醸. (I have no intention of entering additional sake types, but I think there is an argument for doing so). |

Comments: | What about dropping 接続 notes entirely? They belong to grammars instead of dictionaries. Also, the kana-based traditional analysis is unnecessarily complicated. The term 未然形/imperfective form is ambiguous in case of godan and sahen verbs while the term "-nai stem" incorrectly selects the し form of sahen instead of さ required by れる. I would prefer phonological analyses like "godan -u → -areru (-wareru after vowel), ichidan -ru → -rareru, kuru → korareru, suru → sareru", but that's already in the conjugation tables |

Comments: | Previous note had the following issues: 1. Made no mention of せる connecting to サ変 nor of させる connecting to カ変 and to the original 未然形 of サ変. 2. Using the term imperfective form to refer to the 未然形 is not good idea as the same term is sometimes used to refer to verbs in the non-past form. I have tried to address both of the above issues by adding a mention to カ変 and changing the terminology to -nai stem where applicable. However, I felt the need to try to specify the inflection for サ変 as -nai stem does not clearly indicate さ nor せ, and saying irrealis or 未然形 would leave it ambiguous between 2-4 options. 3. In "Senses 1-3 can be abbreviated as す" the "Senses 1-3" part can be removed as those are all senses in the entry. I have chosen to remove that altogether as this can be addressed with an entry for the abbreviation itself, similar to how it is done with ねー for ない. 4. The description of the させる・せる that means permission found in [2] is misleading as "having been granted" only applies to させられる, させてもらう, and their like: causative-passive or causative-benefactive constructions. This is a problem as the meaning of permission occurs even when せる・させる is by itself: 食べさせる can be someone physically forcing someone to eat, or it could just be someone giving someone food or allowing then to do so by some others means. I have changed its definition accordingly and have also removed the note as keeping those examples without examples of せる・させる used in isolation may lead readers to believe that causative-passive/benefactive constructions are only causative constructions. I have also removed the [hum] tag as the permissive sense is not inherently humble and I imagine it was only there due to the aforementioned conflation of this meaning with causative-benefactive forms. Minor changes: changed "causative" to "causative voice" so readers may more easily research the term if needed, and changed ~あら(さ)せられる to あら〜せられる as both options cannot exist simultaneously and I doubt that who wrote this intended the verb to be 荒らす. Notes: Though せさせる for サ変 is all but gone from modern standard Japanese, the forms ぜさせる and ぜられる are still considered the grammatically correct forms for the derived ザ変 verbs; however, those forms are extremely rare as ずる verbs have been supplanted by their じる counterparts and are infrequent themselves, albeit not yet gone. Aside from that, I opted to use サ変 and カ変 instead of "suru/kuru class" in order to slightly shorten the usage note. |

Comments: | Is this word even real? I cannot find any reference to this word other than online portals that use jmdict. The definition's "residing in hell" part (...really?...) made me wonder if this was supposed to be some anime character or folklore or something, but even then I should expect some Wiki or fansite page to come up. Really just could not find anything using this word. |
