These poles, which are long and thin are a stage prop called ‘sashigane’, and thanks to their movement we can feel as if the creatures are alive on stage. http://kamigata.jp/kmgt/68th-exhibition/ A technique called ‘sashigane’ is used in kabuki plays. ‘Sashigane’ is a long stick with a prop animal (a butterfly or bird) attached at the end. ‘Kurogo[2]’ or ‘koken[3]’ holds the ‘sashigane’ and moves it as if it is real. Therefore the term ‘sashigane’ has come to mean to manipulate a person from behind. Here's the specific puppet sense [3], with pictures(search さしがね). It really is quite distinct as a device from [2] https://www2.ntj.jac.go.jp/dglib/contents/learn/edc26/ningyo/shikumi3.html 43457 53.5% <--- I suspect this is usually "さきん" "difference"(financial) 曲尺 16806 20.7% <--- common term for carpenter's square 指矩 446 0.5% 差し金 19640 24.2% <--- I suspect this is usually figurative (ie. sense[3]) 103 6.4% This is funny... |
Comments: | Sankoku gives my suggested [2] and [3] under one entry, but while similar, both devices are quite distinct in form an function(one's a flexible bouncy wire, the other a rigid rod, and they are used in different performance styles). I'm not sure squeezing them together would be an improvement. Encountered "差し金" as the "instigation" sense. It seems something like- "who sent you" or "who put you up to this". Did my master put you up to this? I would guess [4] is used almost exclusively has [person]の[差し金], as a question or a statement. "This isn't my doing", "He put you up to this didn't he", etc... As a [n] entry, [4] will always be somewhat obtuse unless we can add an explicit 誰の差し金だ entry, which I'm not sure would be approved. As senses, [2,3] are legitimate as it is. But I am adding them specifically for their etymological value in explaining [4]. Here's a japanese article with the same etymological explanation, with pictures of kabuki butterflies. Again, the question was about "それは誰のさしがねですか?" https://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q1180318746 ”さしがね”とは、陰で人をそそのかし操ることですね。 ======= For kanji, it looks like we may have ended up with some misleading kanji-preferences by merging these entries. The figurative sense seems to dominate ngrams, and is generally written 差し金. But an *actual* carpenter's square seems to be more commonly written with a different kanji form. Notably 差し金 doesn't appear in the wikipedia entry on carpenter's squares (though I more and more take wikipedia with a grain of salt). That said, sankoku gives only 差し金 for all four senses. But really,かねじゃく【曲尺/矩尺】 seems to be the more common term for a square today. (Note this also uses the 矩 kanji). |
