I'm dubious about this. IMO, よる has the standard forms of による によって have expressions in Edict for just those conjugations. よる on its own handles all the other forms.

I would suggest rejecting this change.

i've never really been sure about most of these entries that begin in particles anyway. i think they're mostly useful here as expressions for people who want to look up particular grammar points. to be honest, i wouldn't really mind if they were deleted and just acted as redirects to the entries for 関する, etc. in any case, i agree with the rejection

Not really, expressions like に対する have special entries in dictionaries (not just Edict, 新和英大辞典第5版 has に対する) because they are more common than other forms or have special usages. You're right that we should probably have に対し, but again that's a special case.
3. A* 2010-08-04 13:06:43  Scott

missing に対し

I think you're right but then all of the variants should be entered into edict.
2. A* 2010-08-04 12:37:37  Paul Blay <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Same as による, I would suggest rejecting this change.

に対して and に対する are two very common expressions that are fine, IMO, for handling _just_ those forms. There is a separate entry for 対する that can handle everything else.

Wikipedia uses 指矩. The sense 1 meaning isn't that common. Also, I don't think we should completely hide forms that are neither irregular nor variants of other (visible) forms (e.g. 異体字). 指矩 should be visible in some form or another.
I don't think the bunraku rod is necessarily metal.

For 指矩 the kokugos have "「指矩」とも", etc. I think it can be hidden. Of course it's not "esp. 指矩" with those n-grams and its total absensce from the JEs..
Putting the "instigation" back as sense 2. It's in the JEs, unlike the kabuki/bunraku ones.

Kabuki, with a short video:
https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=4010990488983316
In kabuki, representations of insects and small animals such as butterflies, sparrows and mice often appear attached to the end of a pole. These poles, which are long and thin are a stage prop called ‘sashigane’, and thanks to their movement we can feel as if the creatures are alive on stage.

http://kamigata.jp/kmgt/68th-exhibition/
A technique called ‘sashigane’ is used in kabuki plays. ‘Sashigane’ is a long stick with a prop animal (a butterfly or bird) attached at the end. ‘Kurogo[2]’ or ‘koken[3]’ holds the ‘sashigane’ and moves it as if it is real. Therefore the term ‘sashigane’ has come to mean to manipulate a person from behind.

Here's the specific puppet sense [3], with pictures(search さしがね). It really is quite distinct as a device from [2]
https://www2.ntj.jac.go.jp/dglib/contents/learn/edc26/ningyo/shikumi3.html
人形の右手は、主遣いが持って遣います。人形の左手には「差金(さしがね)」という棒が付いていて、左遣いが右手でこの差金を持って遣います。左遣いはこの差金についた引糸(ひきいと)によって、人形の手首などを操作します。

  Comments:
Sankoku gives my suggested [2] and [3] under one entry, but while similar, both devices are quite distinct in form an function(one's a flexible bouncy wire, the other a rigid rod, and they are used in different performance styles). I'm not sure squeezing them together would be an improvement.

Encountered "差し金" as the "instigation" sense. Sankoku example is だれの差しだ。 It seems something like- "who sent you" or "who put you up to this".
お前ら師匠の差し金か。Did my master put you up to this?
I would guess [4] is used almost exclusively has [person]の[差し金], as a question or a statement. "This isn't my doing", "He put you up to this didn't he", etc...
As a [n] entry, [4] will always be somewhat obtuse unless we can add an explicit 誰の差し金だ entry, which I'm not sure would be approved.

As senses, [2,3] are legitimate as it is. But I am adding them specifically for their etymological value in explaining [4].

Here's a japanese article with the same etymological explanation, with pictures of kabuki butterflies. Again, the question was about "それは誰のさしがねですか?"
https://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q1180318746
”さしがね”とは、陰で人をそそのかし操ることですね。
「さしがね」とは、人形浄瑠璃からでた言葉のようです。

=======

For kanji, it looks like we may have ended up with some misleading kanji-preferences by merging these entries. The figurative sense seems to dominate ngrams, and is generally written 差し金. But an *actual* carpenter's square seems to be more commonly written with a different kanji form. Notably 差し金 doesn't appear in the wikipedia entry on carpenter's squares (though I more and more take wikipedia with a grain of salt).

That said, sankoku gives only 差し金 for all four senses. But really,かねじゃく【曲尺/矩尺】 seems to be the more common term for a square today. (Note this also uses the 矩 kanji).

It's completely normal that expressions be also marked as verbs. It simply indicates that they conjugate as verbs because they have one at the end. The "exp" tag makes it clear that they're not verbs in and out of themselves.

No change to the above.
I wondered [I saw the other comments on first submission] if you may wish to incorporate the follwing into the above and identify it as the less usual [if my search has got that right] by placing it second in order:-

でかい顔する 【でかいかおする】 (exp,vs-i) (col) (See 大きな顔をする) to act self-importantly; to be arrogant; to be high-handed; to puff up

If a searcher comes across one or the other, the searcher may wonder about the significance of the two entries, as opposed to simple volume of usage.

Is it a separate entry in daijr/gg5, or just a
sense in 限る? I have a feeling this would be
better to just cover (with the same note) in
the 限る entry.
Do we do "X"/"Y" when there's two unknown
variables? I forget, but recall seeing it
somewhere. It's not very pretty though.
