Hi, the English translation of the example sentence ("The problem about 'the instrumentality of mankind' is being looked into by the committee") is not very helpful for understanding the meaning of this word. I am a native English speaker and I have zero idea what "instrumentality of mankind" is supposed to mean.

Yes, I agree that "mustelids" should not be a gloss.  (It refers to the animals themselves as opposed to the family.)

It's my understanding that X-ids refer to X類 rather than X
科, i.e. members of the 科, rather than the 科 itself. I 
thought I saw a 科 entry where Rene had removed the "X-id" 
gloss giving an explanation like that but I couldn't find it 
looking through entries ending in 科 now, so it might have 
been a different kind of entry. But if "mustelids" is 
accepted here, shouldn't ideally each 科 entry have an -"id"

I don't think for a moment the Japanese person/people thought they were constructing a term from English and French. "Metre" is a very common word in English, and that surely is the source of the 外来語. OK, I'll close out this one now.

I don't really want to comment on sense 2 in particular as I have not come across it in use.  However I do agree with the XXXが as a useful test in general.

Scott commmented to me by email: "I've noticed that you sometimes seem to think of the POS in relation to the English equivalent. I think that something can be a noun in Japanese yet an expression in English (simply because no equivalent noun may express the same idea). The POS should in this case be "noun"."
I replied: "Well, I do think the stated PoS and the English gloss should agree as far as possible. That's why I don't like  a PoS of "n" and a gloss that starts "to ....". I change them to a participle, etc. for that reason.
While I agree that what may be a single word in one language may be several in another, I added: "A test I apply was suggested by Bart Mathais (ex Japanese professor at UofHawaii). He said "if you can't say XXXが ..., it's not a noun. That seems to apply very well to sense 2 of 天ぬき.  I couldn't envisage 天ぬきが...  for that sense. That sense of 天ぬき is, of course, a bit of a play on words. I'd imagine it used in passages like "それは天ぬきと言う場合...".

We agreed to raise this as a discussion point for this entry.

I'm a bit dubious of the gg5 glosses - particularly the 'usable' one.  I think 実動車(じつどうしゃ？) might be best considered as a word of its own rather than a demonstration of the meaning of 実動. That "へきりゅう" is a synonym; not another reading of 壁立.
If 大辞林 people were sure it's a reading, they'd have put it at the top.

I got it from the daijirin entry and 立 can have りゅう as a reading so it seemed possible.

I think we OK these now and revisited later if needed.

The only point left that needs considering is whether '... in hotels' is accurate enough.  Going by wiki the 'service' is arranged in a shop (lacking a shop name) then both man and 'service provider' go to a hotel.  "prostitution services in hotels" makes it sound like the prostitutes are available in the hotel in the first place.
