|
Comments: | I encountered this as [1](example below). More comments at the main 心気 entry. I think 心気 is clearly its own thing by the ngrams(18376), and by the counts given for 心気くさい(~100), I think this kanji is best hidden under [sK] as a spelling error. sankoku splits the senses [1] and [2]. I sometimes see these entries were very unrelated glosses are sitting next to each other to avoid splitting senses... In the context I saw this was distinctly nothing to do with annoyance or irritation. I'm not sure how to interpret sankoku's dialect notes. Note that they are different for [1] and [2]. The もと in (もと関西方言) suggests to me that this *was* kansai-ben, but is now more generally recognized? Do we note this("formerly kansaiben?") [2] is still recorded as a strictly regional dialect, but is more broad than kansaiben. (関西・中部・中国方言) The use I encountered was by a young, brash, anime warrior-type character, and I know these figures often get "rough" dialects assigned to them, but I'm not an expert on that. Frieren: 俺がこの村に来たとき、みんな辛気くさい顔して、竜の恐怖におびえていた。そんな連中がさ、今で幸せそう笑っているんだよ When I arrived here, all of the villagers wore grim expressions and lived in fear of the dragon. Now those people are smiling happily ==== I swapped kanji ordering purely on the ngrams where the kanji form has a 3-1 lead, though くさい was written in kanji where I encountered it. |

Planted among the Natsumikan are Amanatsu, a closely related citrus but with fruit that is sweeter and of a somewhat milder acidity. Harvesting commences from January; Check out the "amanatsu" marketing https://japanshopping.org/search/items/detail/bath-time-with-amanatsu-orange All (roughly) the same thing, and we have entries for all of them, some of which don't match each other: カワノナツダイダイ(川野夏橙) 甘夏橙、甘夏蜜柑、甘夏柑、略して甘夏 甘夏 114873 甘夏柑 6274 甘夏蜜柑 429 カワノナツダイダイ too long for ngram db 川野夏橙 270 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanatsu Amanatsu (甘夏) or natsumikan (ナツミカン(夏蜜柑)) is a yellowish orange citrus hybrid fruit, a group of cultivars of Citrus natsudaidai, which were discovered in 1740 in the Yamaguchi prefecture of Japan. Names Amanatsu (甘夏) means "sweet summer" in Japanese. In Japan, the fruit is known as kawano natsu daidai (カワノナツダイダイ(川野夏橙)), but also colloquially the amanatsu, amanatsu daidai (甘夏橙), amanatsukan (甘夏柑), and amanatsu mikan (甘夏蜜柑(甘夏みかん)) https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/カワノナツダイダイ カワノナツダイダイ(川野夏橙)は、ミカン科ミカン属の柑橘類の一つ。...ナツダイダイの枝変わり種である[1][2][3][2]。 甘夏橙、甘夏蜜柑、甘夏柑、略して甘夏などとも呼ばれる。 |

Comments: | If a consensus is reached, the entry on 甘夏蜜柑 should look exactly like this one. There is a very strong tie with the non-甘 variety as well. (夏蜜柑) See ngrams: "甘夏" is everywhere in grocery stores here, a later-season alternative to a 八朔 はっさく orange. This is the popular term that should probably be xref'd. I didn't find it especially sweet, in spite of the name... (it's apparently not so much "sweet" as "less sour than a natsumikan", which is known for being particularly sour) We gloss 八朔 as Hassaku orange (Citrus hassaku) I see no reason to do anything differently here. This is principally a Japanese cultivar sold principally in Japan. Fruit & vegetable flavor profiles are not generally under our purview. If you google "amanatsu orange", you'll quite quickly get all the details you could ever want. Glossed often as "watson pomelo" by old 和英辞典, this seems like a cruel conspiracy foisted on the Japanese, constantly writing amantsu(watson pomelo) as if anyone in the West had any idea what a "watson pomelo" was. Good luck finding this name anywhere today. English wikipedia contains no explicit reference to such a thing, but an article on the "Arab Agricultural Revolution" has a footnote on historian Andrew Watson, saying: "In support of his thesis, Watson charted the advance of seventeen food crops and one fiber crop that became important over a large area of the Mediterranean world during the first four centuries of Islamic rule (roughly the seventh through eleventh centuries C.E.)"[30] The food crops named by Watson were rice, sorghum, durum wheat, sugar cane, watermelon, aubergine (eggplant), spinach, artichoke, taro, sour orange (pomelo), lemon, lime, banana, plantain, mango, and coconut; the fibre was cotton." so, there's a pomelo-named-after-Watson there. Looks like the Japanese orange may have been marketed in India under the name "Watson Pomelo" in the 1940s and 50s: Book search: 1948: Journal of Scientific and Industrial Research - Volume 7 - Page 82 Often under cultivation in the Punjab , the United Provinces , Central Provinces , and Madras under the name Watson pomelo . This is a cheap summer orange and may be valuable as a substitute for grapefruit . 24. C. nobilis Lour . India again(10 years later, not going well): Bombay (State) Department of Agriculture · 1958 · Snippet view As regards the effect of various root - stocks it is seen that Gajanimma , Sohyndong and Kodur Jamburi have been the most outstanding while Satkara and Watson Pomelo are not satisfactory . Atlantia has produced dwarf plants . |

Actually it seems to hardly even conjugate at all so it's probably fine to even remove the v5k. |

Comments: | NOTE: incomplete entry. Explanation: i can understand from a given context what this term means, but since i have not found it in any of the dictionaries i have access to, i have very cautiously offered English meanings, hoping (trusting) that others will expand this entry as needed (perhaps GG5 has something? i don't have that dictionary). For example, with sense 1 i suspect that colloquial terms like "piling up", "stuffing into", etc., could apply in some situations, as well... As regards sense 2, i am sure it is merely a matter of time before it will be found somewhere, since the verb form has been documented |

Comments: | What about dropping 接続 notes entirely? They belong to grammars instead of dictionaries. Also, the kana-based traditional analysis is unnecessarily complicated. The term 未然形/imperfective form is ambiguous in case of godan and sahen verbs while the term "-nai stem" incorrectly selects the し form of sahen instead of さ required by れる. I would prefer phonological analyses like "godan -u → -areru (-wareru after vowel), ichidan -ru → -rareru, kuru → korareru, suru → sareru", but that's already in the conjugation tables |

Comments: | Previous note had the following issues: 1. Made no mention of せる connecting to サ変 nor of させる connecting to カ変 and to the original 未然形 of サ変. 2. Using the term imperfective form to refer to the 未然形 is not good idea as the same term is sometimes used to refer to verbs in the non-past form. I have tried to address both of the above issues by adding a mention to カ変 and changing the terminology to -nai stem where applicable. However, I felt the need to try to specify the inflection for サ変 as -nai stem does not clearly indicate さ nor せ, and saying irrealis or 未然形 would leave it ambiguous between 2-4 options. 3. In "Senses 1-3 can be abbreviated as す" the "Senses 1-3" part can be removed as those are all senses in the entry. I have chosen to remove that altogether as this can be addressed with an entry for the abbreviation itself, similar to how it is done with ねー for ない. 4. The description of the させる・せる that means permission found in [2] is misleading as "having been granted" only applies to させられる, させてもらう, and their like: causative-passive or causative-benefactive constructions. This is a problem as the meaning of permission occurs even when せる・させる is by itself: 食べさせる can be someone physically forcing someone to eat, or it could just be someone giving someone food or allowing then to do so by some others means. I have changed its definition accordingly and have also removed the note as keeping those examples without examples of せる・させる used in isolation may lead readers to believe that causative-passive/benefactive constructions are only causative constructions. I have also removed the [hum] tag as the permissive sense is not inherently humble and I imagine it was only there due to the aforementioned conflation of this meaning with causative-benefactive forms. Minor changes: changed "causative" to "causative voice" so readers may more easily research the term if needed, and changed ~あら(さ)せられる to あら〜せられる as both options cannot exist simultaneously and I doubt that who wrote this intended the verb to be 荒らす. Notes: Though せさせる for サ変 is all but gone from modern standard Japanese, the forms ぜさせる and ぜられる are still considered the grammatically correct forms for the derived ザ変 verbs; however, those forms are extremely rare as ずる verbs have been supplanted by their じる counterparts and are infrequent themselves, albeit not yet gone. Aside from that, I opted to use サ変 and カ変 instead of "suru/kuru class" in order to slightly shorten the usage note. |

Comments: | Scott commmented to me by email: "I've noticed that you sometimes seem to think of the POS in relation to the English equivalent. I think that something can be a noun in Japanese yet an expression in English (simply because no equivalent noun may express the same idea). The POS should in this case be "noun"." I replied: "Well, I do think the stated PoS and the English gloss should agree as far as possible. That's why I don't like a PoS of "n" and a gloss that starts "to ....". I change them to a participle, etc. for that reason. While I agree that what may be a single word in one language may be several in another, I added: "A test I apply was suggested by Bart Mathais (ex Japanese professor at UofHawaii). He said "if you can't say XXXが ..., it's not a noun. That seems to apply very well to sense 2 of 天ぬき. I couldn't envisage 天ぬきが... for that sense. That sense of 天ぬき is, of course, a bit of a play on words. I'd imagine it used in passages like "それは天ぬきと言う場合...". We agreed to raise this as a discussion point for this entry. |
