Comments: | I stumbled upon this entry in the JMdict file and wondered what meaning of "tart" it might be, the food or perhaps a word for prostitute. I googled for it and found no evidence that there is such a word. Every example I found looks like "chinsha" as in "apology". Suggest deletion/putting into the fruit cellar/whatever you do with dubious entries, unless someone has actual evidence of its use meaning "tart". |

|
Comments: | Definitions are all about knowing an under-the-surface fact based on the information one is able to see (inference). "to infer" is already baked into 窺う。 Reverso often glosses things like うかがい知ることができる as "able to guess" with the implication that the "guess" is correct. 知る may also be adding that nuance. sankoku's example also uses the うかがい知ることができる structure (他人にはうかがい知ることができない). defn: 外に現れたことから、中の様子を知る。 proverb-encyclopedia gives a synonym of 察知, which we gloss as: to sense; to infer; to gather; to pick up on; to get wind of; to perceive These seem consistent with the many examples in reverso. As a gloss, "understand" in particular seems to discard all sense of nuance. (I am sure there are situations it could be used, but it doesn't seem like a particularly good general choice). The great majority of reverso examples (and there are a good number) are of the ことが出来る・できない structure https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/うかがい知る The volunteered hinative example also used this structure, as did the random examples I found when looking for evidence of "figure out". "to see" , as in "are able to see, are unable to see..." is actually one of the most common reverso glosses. I'm sure my "to guess" parenthetical remark already doesn't look great. I'm not sure what I'd want to add "too see" to this list. Similar for "to tell", "they couldn't tell what he was thinking (because his displayed no outward signs") |

Comments: | I wasn't a fan of "feticide" here(we don't have it on any other terms for abortion), but it seems like there may be some of that implication here. This is first-and-foremost a medical term, but it appears to be the one adopted by the Japanese legislature, and has a may have a rather stronger association with 堕胎罪. Four kinds codified under law are: 1.堕胎罪 2.同意堕胎罪 3.業務上堕胎罪 4.不同意堕胎罪 In any case, 中絶 or 妊娠中絶 are the more everyday terminology. |

Comments: | On further thought, I'm removing [sK] from 谷まる in favor of [rK]. It is "correct', and this form *does* appear in yourei, even in recent works. You can even find the off appearance in wikipedia. There is another recently added entry "進退これ谷まる". If we [sK] 谷 here, it will looks very strange for it to appear there. And if we go strictly off of statistics, there's an argument to [sK] 谷 out of the きわまる entry itself. Note: for statistical purposes, only 窮 and 谷 are actually considered analogous by Japanese people, so their relative statistics should probably not consider the more-common 極, which throws off a lot of numbers. |

Comments: | no dictionary entries for 窮, and yourei and google news are exclusively 進退窮, so I'm adding 極 as [sK], even though the statistics might otherwise be high enough to display it. 極 is well-represented on twitter though, so definitely worth at least the [sK]. sankoku suggests that 谷 and 窮 are "technically" interchangeable, but doesn't have a dedicated entry for this expression. |

Comments: | It's a significantly higher proportion if you include には忍びない (essentially the same form). I think "often" is fine. We only use "sometimes" notes for variant forms/kanji/etc. I suspect that に(は)忍びない dominates in literature. In Aozora, it accounts for 79% of 忍びない usage. |

Comments: | たまをのぼし is archaic kana usage of a kind that is not recorded in edict (e.g., look up たまおのほし in daijirin and they'll have the archaic kana たまをのほし next to it). entries already exist for 魂讃め星 and 魂緒の星, although both can apparently also be written as 鬼宿. so a merge might be considered or perhaps 鬼宿 should just be added to those entries.) if the (modern) reading たまおのぼし belongs anywhere it is as an alternate reading of 魂緒の星 until a merge occurs (if that ever happens). suggest reject here |

Comments: | There's a third meaning (準備して待ち構える) that isn't in the kokugos but is now more common than the "stand and watch" meaning, according to the 文化庁's most recent 国語に関する世論調査 (see page 25 of the PDF above). Not sure how best to translate it. The second link has a couple of examples of this usage (which is still considered incorrect by many). |

Comments: | Well, personally I don't see why they wouldn't be split. Even if they have the same spelling (and even if they came from the same source word, which apparently they don't) they're still two different senses. I might agree with you if "cargo sling" and "baby sling" hadn't been added, but after that happened one sense was clearly erected to mean a kind of 'sling' that doesn't apply to 'Singapore sling'. |

Comments: | i tend to agree with your intuition. i think the "standard" that was decided on for these kanwa-jitennish type entries was "if it appears as a regular entry in a kokugo dictionary that is not kojien", then it's good to go. the latest edition of kojien eliminated a lot of their kanwa entries, but there's still plenty in there |

Comments: | I think just having an entry for 気にしない is sufficient. All those versions with amplifiers such as 少しも, ちっとも, 一切 and 全然 could probably be dropped. 気にしない has a subentry in 新和英中辞典 and is the gloss for a heap of entries in リーダーズ+プラス. I guess it could argued that it's obvious as a negative of 気にする, and I presume that's why most JEs don't have it. I think it would certainly help text-glossing if it was be included. |

Comments: | if the 378 google hit entry was/is accurate, i don't think this should be an entry. even if it gets far more hits, these are just standard meanings for 一切+気にしない. you could say いっさい~ない for any verb, e.g. 一切食べない gets just as many hits as 一切気にしない - if anything, it should be converted to 気にしない, although i'm not certain that is needed as an entry either. i also think the entries for 少しも-, 全然-, and ちっとも気にしない should be reconsidered - note: for whatever reason, i am incapable of recommending this entry for deletion. the system craps out when that box is checked. i think it's a rejected/deleted x-ref thing again |

Comments: | I am not making a submission about the above as such. I searched for "気にしない" and I got the above entry. Then I clicked the link to "気にする". Then I could see that my search was the negative of the positive. I know how that progression happened. My point is this: Should there be an entry for "気にしない"? Based upon what I believe you have stated before, there is no reason why there should be an entry for either the positive or negative. So, in my way of thinking, either there should be neither entry or there should be both entries [that would seem to be logic to me because if it were not for the nature of such an entry, normality would say that only "気" plus the [n,vs]classification would be normal]. If you agreed, the link in the above would be to "気にしない". The following entries would carry the same logic:- 少しも気にしない 【すこしもきにしない】 (exp,adj-i) not give a damn; not care a bit 全然気にしない 【ぜんぜんきにしない】 (exp,adj-i) (ant: 気にする) not mind in the slightest; not give a damn; not care a bit ちっとも気にしない 【ちっともきにしない】 (exp,adj-i) (See 気にする) not give a damn; not care a bit; could care a less If you preferred, for some measure of clarity, I guess that you could include the “ant” in front of the link to all of the entries to which I have referred. However, the aspect which I think can cause an odd way of thinking with the existing entry for “気にする” is the negative nuance, ie., as shown below:- 気にする 【きにする】 (exp,vs-i) to mind (negative nuance); to care about; to worry; to pay undue (amount of) attention to (something). Whereas, it seems to me that “気にしない” also, in context, has a positive nuance [ie., [please] don't worry [everything is fine] when said in response to an enquiry from someone who really cares. Sorry to ramble on a bit, but fewer words, in my mode, may have failed to deliver the message. |
