Originally, tsumugi was homemade from domestic or wild-gathered silkworm cocoons that had been broken by hatching[8] or were irregularly formed.[4] Unlike the long-fiber silk, such cloth was permitted to peasants.[9] Traditionally a peasant cloth, handmade tsumugi is very labour-intensive to produce, and has become expensive over time, valued as a luxury folk-craft. 紬, 紡ぎ does not appear except once as a verb, 糸を紡ぎだしたものが紬糸である https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/紬 紡績#手紡ぎ All about spinning, not about the fabric https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/紡績#手紡ぎ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsumugi_(cloth) 紬 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumejima-tsumugi 久米島紬 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yūki-tsumugi Yūki-tsumugi (結城紬) is a variety of silk cloth produced in Japan, The English wikipedia page to pongee has no xref to Japanese https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pongee 紬 324380 53.6% 紡ぎ 280672 46.4% |
|
Comments: | The usual gloss in English for "紬" now appears to be the romanized tsumigi. It is considered to be "a japanese pongee". (You can search Ebay, or google for tsumigi). At first I was going to suggest this be split into 2 *entries* (not just senses, as discussed on 紡ぎ糸). But after a lot of reading, I don't think 紡ぎ is generally used as "pongee" or tsumugi. The high n-gram occurences are for spinning-related activities. reverso hits are all "spinning", wikipedia in English/Japanese list only 紬. The cleanest/simplest thing to do, without dictionary support suggesting otherwise (daijs doesn't), is to just [sK] it, or remove it entirely. Also, the [expl] would appear to be off. sankoku specifically mentions the fabric being tough (あらい手ざわり, and not especially thin), and English wikipedia notes the same several times. Originally this was a low-grade silk product used by peasants. If I understand correctly, this is not a particularly obscure term. If you see a picture of the cloth, you might remember the texture yourself if you've ever handled such a fabric (in a kimono, etc). |

Comments: | For sense [1], since this is not terribly common by comparison, and pretty weak on cooking results, xref to the Japanese common equivalent(and not ポピーシード). Added [sK] to 罌粟粒. For whatever reason 罌粟 is not commonly used for the seeds (this or 罌粟の実). Copied "something extremely tiny" from the entry on 粟粒. I see no evidence that this should behave generically as an adj-f. There is one single character in a story "芥子粒夫人", otherwise it's 芥子粒のよう, 芥子粒ほど etc. We seem to be treating this as an [exp] and tossing out equivalent English idioms for "small things". But "like a pin's head" and "pinhead-like" only work once ほど or のよう are added. "small as ants" is likewise 芥子粒のように小さい. "芥子粒" by itself is insufficient. 芥子粒のような小さな 41 芥子粒のように小さく 33 芥子粒のように小さい 32 芥子粒のように小さな 22 This isn't adj-no either. Basically the only thing to follow の is よう: 芥子粒の 1092 芥子粒のよう 848 I think 粟粒 handled this better. As an [exp], the actual equivalent seems like it should just be "(an) ant(s)", "the head of a pin". Could maybe fix this with a [note] and a change from [n] to [exp]. [note="~ほど、~のよう"] |

Comments: | Thanks, Paul. I reopened the other one, which I think is labelled incorrectly. You can see the madness it does to verb conjugations here: http://ryouko.imsb.nrc.ca/cgi-bin/wwwjdic? 1W%CD%AD%A4%EA%A4%A6%A4%EB_v1 (remove the space in that url after the question mark). i think there's some hack that's been programmed for あ りうる too, since that page says it recognizes that ~うる comes from a ni-dan verb, even though it still conjugates it as ichidan |

4. | A* 2010-07-22 21:01:30 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
Comments: | i believe that these can't be merged due to PoS issues. ~得る[える] is [v1], ~得 る[うる] is the 連体形 of a [v2] verb that is used as a suffix and doesn't conjugate. we don't want ~得る[うる] to show up in verb conjugation tables, therefore it can't be included here. which unfortunately means two entries are needed (as we currently have for 得る[える] and 得る[うる]) |

Comments: | Added names. Digging into wikipedia's sources, we read that S. fuscescens is often misidentified as S. canaliculatus. We also read of genetic evidence that along with S. unimaculatus and S. vulpinus, some evidence that the four were color morphs of each other. However fishbase notes some striking behavioral and habitat difference between S. fuscescens and S. canaliculatus that in my mind weaken the argument that they are the same species. Suggest that the study cited is so speculative that the note that S. canaliculatus may in fact be S. fuscescens is struck from the gloss until a time if ever that definitive reclassification occurs by ITIS / Fishbase, as it appears now that Fishbase goes out of its way to offer reasons why they are not the same. |

Comments: | I go the other way on the ultimate status of all entries. I would like to see a dictionary unrivaled by sheer size - a complete unabridged tome of the language in its current form, past forms, and all of its niche and subcultural vernaculars be they colloquial or technical. The merger of ENAMDIC and EDICT. Richer, more informative glosses. In my mind the unchallenged heavyweight champion dictionary of the world is the Oxford unabridged. Would like to see an electronic and FREE resource of equal stature one day (probably long after our demise). Think of the implications... of destiny... history ha ha. |
|
5. | A* 2010-07-22 07:50:38 Paul Blay <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Personally I prefer the most common format first. The candidates are アマシイラ (Japanese pseudo-scientific name, also in common use, Google estimate of 53,600 page hits), あましいら (reading of kanji in hiragana, effectively non-existant on the web), 甘鱪/甘鱰 (are these even words? I guess so they're in wikipedia (j/k)). So in this case I would much prefer to have the katakana first. On a much more general note, I think the 学名 / 和名 business is large enough to support a separate dictionary in which those concepts can be given priority, hiragana abolished and actual common usage be given second priority to scientific accuracy. They wouldn't have to be exiled from Edict, although some degree of separation might be appropriate. |
|
4. | A* 2010-07-21 03:30:26 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Yeah, I get that. And I think the new display system that places the katakana before the kanji and hiragana is a huge, huge improvement. But I think there's some "discomfort" (I speak for myself, and I think perhaps for Jim based on his Jun 21, 2010 8:55 pm newsgroup posting) with using katakana before hiragana for the reading of a word with a Japanese origin. Compare entries in JMdict that come from modern Chinese (they carry a (chi:) language tag). When the readings of the kanji words come directly from un-Japanized Chinese, the katakana reading is often placed first (and as I recall, many of them don't include hiragana whatsoever). That's the format consistently used by kokugo dictionaries too. So it seems odd to me to place katakana before hiragana if it comes from Japanese. And if consistency is the goal, I recommend hiragana first... For species names that have included the kanji up to now, that's far and away the most commonly used format. (Although that's admittedly my own doing, in large part.) |
|
3. | A* 2010-07-21 03:04:24 James Rose <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Sounds like Jim might not care... but I agree we should set it down one way or the other and make the entries more consistent. I not married to katakana first, just believe it reflects an appropriate precedence better if that makes any sense. |

This is a real tsumugi silk yarn, NOT the italian bourette/noil silk also wrongly called tsumugi. It is produced in Japan. https://hasegawacorporation.com/?category_id=61fb5d52c15c5a748b09abb9 CATEGORY 紬糸 Silk Noil https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsumugi_(cloth) It is a tabby weave material woven from yarn produced using silk noil, short-staple silk fibre (as opposed to material produced using longer, filament silk fibres). Originally, tsumugi was homemade from domestic or wild-gathered silkworm cocoons that had been broken by hatching[8] or were irregularly formed.[4] https://thesilkyweave.com/2016/01/10/tsumugi-silk-what-is-that/ Tsumugi silk – what is that? Posted on January 10, 2016 by Sophie I have been asked twice recently about tsumugi silk. Well, the short answer is that tsumugi (紬) is a yarn spun from the silk waste, with nubs and some unevenness. Not shiny, but has a good grip – excellent choice for a weft if you’re thinking about a baby wrap, a shawl, or a scarf. And if it is spun firmly, it can be a warp too. In other words, the silk noil or bourette silk, known to the Western world, is tsumugi silk. |
|
Comments: | I think this should be two entries. 紬糸 refers only to a particular kind of silk 糸 used in 紬, and not all silk thread(in particular I've come to learn "silk noir" or "raw silk"). An xref to my now-edited 紬 would make the meaning clear with little effort. "tsumugi silk yarn" is a good gloss in the marketplace. I think in Japanese that 紬糸 is probably a good translation of "silk noir", but in English "tsumugi" should only refer to Japanese products... For 紡ぎ糸, I just proposed an related entry for the probably-more-practical: 手紡ぎ糸 hand-spun yarn |

Comments: | yeah, but unfortunately this can't really be a (v2a-s) because it doesn't end in う. that would have to be for 変わり得, should the need for such a thing exist. easiest way is probably to have separate entries for 変わり得る[かわりうる,かわりえる(ik)] (adj-f,exp) and 変わり得ない[かわりえない] (adj-i) and just let the other rare odds and ends like かわりうれば fall by the wayside... i don't know if there's really a need for 変わり得. |
