Comments: | there are a number. search for 'アイタムを', for example. it's unquestionably a typo, but the general policy seems to be that typos should stay as [ik]. reference for sense 2 has been given. if it's in a dictionary you're going to have a hard time proving that it's ~never~ actually used that way, unless you document every single web hit. but if you can suggest a better translation for sense 2, feel free to do so |

|
Comments: | 'something that one "just has to have"' is a mistranslation & should be removed. I can't find a single credible example of アイタム on the web. |

Comments: | I would argue that koj and gakkoku say it's from アクセレーター (I included the others not as support for the change, just to give a fair summary). That plus the inclusion in Luminous plus the evidence of usage seems enough to include it. I'm sure we could find much more (old) usage on lab.ndl if we wanted too. I think it's fine. |

Judging by the kokugos I think it's referring to things like graphics or cryptographic accelerators. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_acceleration https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptographic_accelerator Daijirin displays "アクセレレーター," so probably better to make that [rk] rather than [sk]. |

Comments: | You'll all be pretty annoyed if you decide this really is a "crescent moon". But I am reasonbly-ish confident. Not saying everyone completely understands the names of all of the phases of the moon, or that poor automated E->J translations haven't manufacture a small amount of "evidence" that this includes crescents, but a google image search is pretty overwhelmingly half-moons, and here's one more reference as a sanity check: https://groen.jp/columns-recipes/3387.html 上弦の月(アクティブの時期): 月が半月になる状態。 美しい姿を弓に張った弦になぞらえ、弦月(げんげつ)や弓張月(ゆみはりづき)と呼ばれます。 His picture is a slightly less "half" than I would like, but he seems to get the meaning. Is "月が半月" potentially slightly-less than 半月 in his mind... maybe. He also has a 下弦の月 photo, which I think slightly missed the mark in timing, but it's just a personal phot. "ちょうど半月になる状態" seems less ambiguous than above. 下弦の月(デトックスの時期): 新月へ向かい少しずつ細くなっていく途中、ちょうど半月になる状態。 真夜中に昇り昼ごろに沈むため、夜明け以降の青空に見えることがあります。 満月の時に蓄えたものを放出していく過程の時。 |

Comments: | I go the other way on the ultimate status of all entries. I would like to see a dictionary unrivaled by sheer size - a complete unabridged tome of the language in its current form, past forms, and all of its niche and subcultural vernaculars be they colloquial or technical. The merger of ENAMDIC and EDICT. Richer, more informative glosses. In my mind the unchallenged heavyweight champion dictionary of the world is the Oxford unabridged. Would like to see an electronic and FREE resource of equal stature one day (probably long after our demise). Think of the implications... of destiny... history ha ha. |
|
5. | A* 2010-07-22 07:50:38 Paul Blay <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Personally I prefer the most common format first. The candidates are アマシイラ (Japanese pseudo-scientific name, also in common use, Google estimate of 53,600 page hits), あましいら (reading of kanji in hiragana, effectively non-existant on the web), 甘鱪/甘鱰 (are these even words? I guess so they're in wikipedia (j/k)). So in this case I would much prefer to have the katakana first. On a much more general note, I think the 学名 / 和名 business is large enough to support a separate dictionary in which those concepts can be given priority, hiragana abolished and actual common usage be given second priority to scientific accuracy. They wouldn't have to be exiled from Edict, although some degree of separation might be appropriate. |
|
4. | A* 2010-07-21 03:30:26 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Yeah, I get that. And I think the new display system that places the katakana before the kanji and hiragana is a huge, huge improvement. But I think there's some "discomfort" (I speak for myself, and I think perhaps for Jim based on his Jun 21, 2010 8:55 pm newsgroup posting) with using katakana before hiragana for the reading of a word with a Japanese origin. Compare entries in JMdict that come from modern Chinese (they carry a (chi:) language tag). When the readings of the kanji words come directly from un-Japanized Chinese, the katakana reading is often placed first (and as I recall, many of them don't include hiragana whatsoever). That's the format consistently used by kokugo dictionaries too. So it seems odd to me to place katakana before hiragana if it comes from Japanese. And if consistency is the goal, I recommend hiragana first... For species names that have included the kanji up to now, that's far and away the most commonly used format. (Although that's admittedly my own doing, in large part.) |
|
3. | A* 2010-07-21 03:04:24 James Rose <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Sounds like Jim might not care... but I agree we should set it down one way or the other and make the entries more consistent. I not married to katakana first, just believe it reflects an appropriate precedence better if that makes any sense. |

Comments: | Marked as 古風 in sankoku (only one sense). The "intolerable" sense we have here appears to be different from the one on 仕方がない. It's not in the smaller kokugos, and the daijr/s examples are archaic. I think it can be dropped. |

Comments: | Just noticed that our xref for 詮方 is しかた. For consistency, and along with the sankoku definition as 仕方がない, I'm going to suggest changing the xref. The senses in [2] we've marked as "archaic" are also non-archaic senses of 仕方がない, so I wonder... |

Comments: | 1. add surface form 2. mark some [rK] and [sk]. 3. mark [rare]. The hinative comment (last reference) is particularly detailed, not sure if that's enough for [form] or anything else though. (dictionary does not mark as such). Reasonable number of book results. Was going to change xref as [see=仕方がない[1,2]] because I'm not sure this carries any of the special nuances we've attached specifically to the どうしようもない entry. But I'm not confident, so I'm leaving it and just changing the simple things. sankoku defn. in its entirety is "仕方がない". daijs. mentions どうしようもない. 為ん方無い is the daijs form. Of ~30 google book references, ~25 are dictionaries. Leaving as [rK] because of daijs. |
