yeah, it's not really a 'crown'. and also 'i crowned him' means 'i hit him in the head', which was my first reaction when i saw 'crowning a boy'. but i can't think of a better word

how about 'crowning a boy with a traditional Japanese cap' or something?

also, i'll bet this is mostly archaic. it's in my kogo jiten at any rate

No, that old newspaper-based frequency list didn't include kana-only tokens. しぶき is very "uk" and I don't think the n-gram count is high enough to tag it.

I think 飛沫 should lead. It’s not that uncommon as a form for しぶき whereas 繁吹(き) is exceedingly rare.
Jim, is there a way to tell from the wordfreq file whether しぶき should have priority tags? When ひまつ was split off into a separate entry, the priority tags were dropped from here, but しぶき is at least as common as ひまつ(飛沫) according to the n-grams.

Two things:
(a) I think that the 飛沫 kanji form should move to the back of the list. 飛沫 is almost invariably read ひまつ, and this entry can give the wrong impression. しぶき is very much a gikun reading of 飛沫, when it's a reading at all
(b) I think the priority tags should be on the 飛沫/ひまつ entry, so I've added them there.

I would prefer this expression to be shown in a sample sentence under 解明

  Comments:
I'm comfortable with editors self-approving this sort of trimming. As for supplementary information, well some can be useful if there is no common name, or where the common name doesn't actually mean much. It's hard to think of a rule.
5. A* 2013-02-07 08:09:08  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
There's no mention of "supplemental information" in the
guidelines though? (except for when there is no common name)
I agree it _can_ be helpful but personally, I just think of
it as clutter. Descriptions could be added to pretty much
every species including everything but maybe cats and dogs
and it would be somewhat helpful, but also a mess. Armed
with the latin and/or common name, it's not hard to find out
what kind of fauna you're dealing with, even if it isn't
immediately apparent.
4. A* 2013-02-07 07:47:44  Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
that said, before removing them all, i'd read this:
http://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/Editorial_policy#Names_of_biological_species
=
i'd tend to leave supplemental info when it clarifies what the creature IS (i.e., some people may not know what a 'grouper' is, so saying that it is related to a sea bass may be quite helpful.) on the other hand, the species distributions, etc. seem encyclopedic and superfluous to me
3. A* 2013-02-07 06:41:31  Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
We'll wait for Jim's opinion on this, but personally I'm fine if you want to self-approve the removal of all the superfluous info from these fishes.

Google hits 200k. Usage in text is seen often. The meaning is given in both your links and elsewhere. The reading is given in both of your links.
Once one has got the reading and meaning confirmed, it is obvious, but the novice searches around and it does not seem to come up readily. Perhaps you will consider promotion.
If this headword can also have the reading as shown in the following "RH," then perhaps this should be shown in one entry:-
左図 【ひだりず】 (?) ???; RH
However, it will be disappointing to discover that the Japanese can say this headword in any way that takes their fancy and no one will be surprised.
