I'm comfortable with editors self-approving this sort of trimming. As for supplementary information, well some can be useful if there is no common name, or where the common name doesn't actually mean much. It's hard to think of a rule.

There's no mention of "supplemental information" in the 
guidelines though? (except for when there is no common name) 
I agree it _can_ be helpful but personally, I just think of 
it as clutter. Descriptions could be added to pretty much 
every species including everything but maybe cats and dogs 
and it would be somewhat helpful, but also a mess. Armed 
with the latin and/or common name, it's not hard to find out 
what kind of fauna you're dealing with, even if it isn't 
immediately apparent.

i'd tend to leave supplemental info when it clarifies what the creature IS (i.e., some people may not know what a 'grouper' is, so saying that it is related to a sea bass may be quite helpful.)  on the other hand, the species distributions, etc. seem encyclopedic and superfluous to me

We'll wait for Jim's opinion on this, but personally I'm fine if you want to self-approve the removal of all the superfluous info from these fishes.
