Refs: | I agree, re: "it is not idiomatic" - that is exactly the reason why i raised this issue. :-) I have the feeling you may have missed my point: it is not my aim to account for all possible parsings but (since no algorithm can, quite understandably, parse as competently as knowledgeable humans do) to mitigate the fact that the database habitually offers up this idiomatic expression (the only sense currently listed) which in most cases is simply wrong. If all this can be expressed without going into the details i previously suggested, then i'd be very happy - as it stands, what comes up seems to me worse than no result at all. IOW, what i think needs to be said (in some way) is, "in most cases this has no meaning beyond its standard grammatical function, but in some cases, especially if at the end of a sentence, it can mean the following: ..." - even just a CODE pointing to such an explanation would be useful (there are more expressions in the database that i'd like to see looked after in the same manner) Ah, and by the way, "Happy New Year!"... |

Comments: | I don't think it's possible or desirable to cater to every possible parsing of the dictionary's entries. もの+を in the senses listed above is not idiomatic, and it's better parsed by our two existing entries for もの and を rather than trying to force them together unnaturally into this entry |

Comments: | In case someone thinks it worthwhile to point out that 文脈化 is nothing more than the obvious combination of 文脈 with 化 and thus does not warrant an entry, let me say this: 1) I agree (if you see it strictly from a J-E perspective) 2) I don't think that something being obvious means it should not be in a dictionary - in fact, if it wasn't for the vast amount of - to the experienced user - obvious items in this and other databases (especially EIJIRO comes to mind), many of us would still be stuck at the textbook level of language learning - "obviousness" means, after all, "pattern reinforcement" and "psychological reassurance", both of which are vitally important for successful language education (even if this perhaps not obvious to the more technically minded and already fluent linguist); 3) (bonus point) I suspect i am not the only user of JEDIC who regularly uses it as EJDIC. :-) Why? Because there is at present no comparable EJDIC out there, but some of us (for whatever reason - for example, because we live in Japan) not only have to understand Japanese text but also produce Japanese text, and i, for one, am most grateful that JEDIC has turned out to be one of the tools that i can use for that purpose. In this context (no pun intended) it is _also_ useful to have such "obvious" expressions in the database... :-) |

Comments: | I came across this term first in the context of a text where the projection room of a (now defunct) local theater is called 音塾ホール - so perhaps we are seeing the same process at work here that turned originally TM'd expressions like "Aspirin", "Kleenex", and "Xerox" into common expressions - ENAMDIC would seem a safe place for this item. :-) |

Comments: | this looks like a trademarked(?) name. all the references above (except for http://www.otojuku.jp/) seem to refer to the same Yamagata-based company. the odd man out is a company called Otojuku Gakudai, which suggests that they're using Otojuku as the actual ~name~ of the school (e.g., a proper noun). -- i don't know. it would be like if a handful of music-related american education companies were called "Musiconservatory" or something. my feeling is that if it's not a real word, it shouldn't go into EDICT. to ENAMDICT as an [org]? |

Comments: | This is one of those funny beasts that seem to have no denotative meaning (and thus elude dictionaries and Wikipedia alike)! But since it is used widely enough because of its connotative meanings, i think it should be in the database - what is the best way to deal with such items? |

Comments: | I have been trying to find this word (始電) in many dictionaries around the Internet. Finally I was able to find out the meaning and explanation in the Japanese Wikipedia under the term 始発便. Here there is the entry explanation: 始発便(しはつびん)とは鉄道、バス、船舶、航空などの公共交通機関において、あ る路線・航路・航空路で一日のうち最初に運行する便である。鉄道の場合始発列車 (電車なら始発電車(始電))、バスの場合は始発バス(始バス)と呼ばれる。 It might not be a very common word. However I reckon the more words any dictionay has, the better. |

Comments: | Not sure if 胴田貫 deserves the [iK] tag. If I’m understanding sources correctly 同田貫 is used both in fact and fiction, while 胴田貫 is a folk-etymology exclusive to fiction. This is a common trope in jidaigeki as well as modern pop culture. |

Comments: | 源説 is an incorrect parsing for all of those examples. e.g., 誤った語源説 = 誤った 語源+説 民間語源説 = 民間 語源+説 単一起源説 = 単一起源+説 so i don't think this entry can be justified == entries for 起源説 [theory of origins] or 語源説 [etymological theory] might be worthwhile if it's felt that the constructions aren't sufficiently obvious |

Comments: | I am wondering if it would help to have this combination as a main entry. It appears following other kanji in great numbers. Meanings are ascribed to the wider combinations, but no so for this submission, yet the basic concept seems clear enough. On the site you have the following:- 誤った語源説 【?】 false etymology; WI4 民間語源説 【?】 folk etymology; popular etymology; WI4 単一起源説 【?】 monogenesis; WI4 アフリカ起源説 【?】 Out of Africa hypothesis (theory); WI4 起源説 【きげんせつ】 (?) ???; RH 語源説 【ごげんせつ】 (?) ???; RH Some of these pick up over 250k references in a Google search. |
