Because 井 is a kanji; it can't go in the readings field. But given how uncommon it is, I don't think we need to record it.

I don't get why one specific reading (that gets more hits in the ngrams than 5 other readings) is in a note.
I suggest removing a lot of the clutter. ウスケ is not in kotobank's nikk and web hits are not for whiskey so the ngrams are probably
misleading so I removed that one too.

Explanation: I removed a superfluous "(a)" and am trying to bring out the
connotations of this expression more clearly. ("Burnt child syndrome": after i
misapplied this expression today, i was compelled to conduct an extensive
search on the web and found that 一役, as "role/ part" is unambiguously used
in the sense/ context described above but not in such contexts as "my/ their
role" or "the chairperson's role". 私の夢なんですが, with everybody's help, JDIC
will perhaps one day have this kind of syntactic context annotation and (like
EIJIRO) representative usage samples for every item in the database. :-)

固くなる堅くなる硬くなる

1. [exp,v5r]

Conjugations

History:
7. D 2020-04-21 06:39:40  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>

GG5: 固くなる・堅くなる・硬くなる 1 〔かたまる〕 harden; solidify; grow 「hard [solid]; 〔雪などの表面が〕 encrust; crust over; 〔しっかりとなる〕 tighten; 〔こわばる〕 stiffen; grow 「stiff [rigid].
  Comments:
Just quoting GG5's subentry. I don't feel like justifying this any longer, and as Jim Rose points out, it has issues.
6. A* 2020-04-20 03:35:49  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
"硬く" is just the adverb form of the 硬い adjective. We don't usually include these unless they are, for whatever reason, included in one
or more major dictionaries. Also I still don't think this should be an entry. Like Jim Rose pointed out, it ignores the differences
between the different kanji, and also ignores all other meanings held by かたくなる outside of "to become stiff". GG5 is often not the best
guide for what to include, I think. No かたくなる is not an entry in daijs or daijr. (though 硬くなる alone is in nikk)
5. A* 2020-04-19 04:09:15  Jim Rose <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I read the comments posted when the 硬くなる、固くなる、堅くなる entry was differentiated from 硬い、堅い、固い.

My questions: why doesn't the dictionary form occur in the dictionary? 固く is defined on EOW as

1) faithfully(約束する
2) fast(主義・主張・信念などが
3) rigidly(物の接合・固定などが

whereas 硬くis defined as

1) harden(物を)
2) rigidize(材質などを)

And 堅く seems to straddle both definitions:

1) firm
2) firmly
3) rigidly(態度が)〔【形】rigid〕
4) stiff
5) stiffly
6) stonily(人が石のように)
7) tight〈話〉
8) tightly

My macintosh defines 固く • 硬く • 堅く as hard; [動かないようにしっかりと] firmly; [こわばって] stiffly; [すき問のないようにびっちりと] tight, tightly.

Seems to me the most important entry, the dictionary root form, is the most important... might be two different entries (固く;堅く) and (硬く;堅く) and is missing. Not
wanting to add anything until one of you thought about this.

compare that with meikyo's entry here:
(9) [下ろす] 野菜・果物をすりつぶす。「大根[りんご]を―」

  Comments:
The sense “to fillet [a fish]” is not written with the kanji 下ろす・降ろす – this is a confusion with 卸す (also pronounced おろす).

Thus, the line:
[5][v5s,vt]
  to fillet (e.g. a fish)
should be removed.

Most kokugos have this expression.
The smaller dictionaries describe it as fussing over the well-being of others (他人の世話…; 他人のためにばかり…) at the expense of one's own well-being. They don't really mention the "specialist skills" aspect. I'm not sure how accurate that gloss is.

Bear in mind it's a proverb. I don't think a language learner should be worrying too much about the literal meaning of the Japanese, much less agonizing over any ellipsis. We have plenty of expressions where we also give a "lit" Japanese version, and I'd hate to see the English mangled just to make it more 直訳.

See below.
  Comments:
I have not changed the above. My thoughts were triggered by the fact that in some text the above expression is followed by "です" or "だ"; plus also sometimes an exphasis, etc., e.g., "な".

What I was thinking is this: that the parts in the meanings above which turn the expression into a complete statement should be included in brackets, e.g., [lit] even if (it's) rotten, (it's still) sea bream. I am stating this because when the meaning is preceded by the concept of "the literal meaning", namely; upholding the exact or primary meaning of a word or words, the inclusion of "it's" and "it's still" seems to be incorrect. I don't wish to become the pedant, but I am thinking that the novice may be deviated from the true concept of such an expression when trying to balance literal meaning of the Japanes head-word with the meaning given following the prefix [lit].

I think that I would like to see such an entry for the meaning of such expressions set out something like this:

"[this expression is idiomatically usually used simply as 'くさってもたい' and conveys the meaning of] something that is not what it once was but it is still high class; quality is quality; [lit] even if (it's) rotten, (it's still) sea bream.

should be 薬味醤油皿, but that gets only 100 hits, mostly for 「薬味・醤油皿」,
which seems to be pretty strongly associated with a single 120-yen dish sold
on Amazon, which can hold either condiments ~or~ soy sauce
there is some support for the original meaning (e.g.
http://jitandokusho.livedoor.biz/archives/1244317.html), but it seems to
come almost entirely from 日本人の知らない日本語 or its Chinese equivalent.

kojien, daijirin, daijisen and gg5 have 薬味皿 on the other hand

and actually, i think a reading switch is more appropriate. e.g., daijisen has
only しゅうせん, meikyo says in its entry for 秋の扇:
あき‐の‐おうぎ【秋の扇】―アフギ
[連語] 男性から愛されなくなった女性。班女(はんじょ)が扇。秋扇(しゅうせん)。

so しゅうせん is the 'orthodox reading' even though it looks archaic from

ddb:[Basic Meaning:] land of eternally tranquil light

Senses:
# The realm (of spirit) where all are in perpetual peace and glory; the Pure Land of the dharmakāya; the realm of nirvāṇa, eternal and brilliant. Tiantai's fourth buddhakṣetra 四土. The first part of the ninth fascicle of the Fahua wenju says:

The dwelling place [of the bodhisattvas of the earth] is Land of Eternally Tranquil Light. 'Eternity' symbolizes virtue of eternity, 'tranquility' symbolizes virtue of happiness, 'Light' symbolizes virtue of purity and true self, respectively. It is a secret store of four virtues and their dwelling place. [They] abide in the secret store in the way of non-abiding. As 'underneath' is the deep bottom of dharma nature and the ultimate stage of profound truth, [the sūtra] says 'underneath.' Underneath does not belong to here, nor the air belongs to there. Neither here, nor there is none other than the middle way. As [they] emerge from here, they dwell in the air, neither upside nor underneath. It shows the middle way (T 1718.34.125a1-7).
