Well, in the end I guess it's up to you to make an "executive decision" if you think including certain words could hurt the project. We do otoh already
have a ニガー entry. I agree the n-word doesn't really belong here, it's not half as strong as くろんぼ. But I think including "darkie; golliwog" would
help. We decided after some debate that [ctr] entries should begin with "counter for..." despite them already having the [ctr] tag. One of the
arguments was that people don't look too closely at the tags. If we accept that argument here, it could lead a beginner to think this was a useful
synonym to "黒人", or to somebody called this not realized the negative connotations of the word. (and that's without even getting into all the other
reasons why we try to match register in the first place, like being helpful to translators, etc.)

I have a hard time imagining anybody accusing us of being racist for accurately translating a word that's used in a racist manner.

Odd, maybe, but this is VERY sensitive topic in many parts of the Enlish-speaking world. The last thing I want is knee-jerk censorship and pillorying of this whole project because of an attempt to match register. I'm afraid MILF is/was not in the same league as this one.

  Comments:
Encountered 黒子 in the wild. Various entries are inconsistent with beauty mark vs. spot, the former seems more common, both seem fine to me in AmE.

I'm having a hard time finding any use of the [ok] readings outside of the kokugo entry itself. Google books turned up an interesting ref suggesting ははくろ, at least, is quite an old term indeed...
「ははくろ」が、長い間に「ほくろ」と形を変えたものでしょう. ははくそ, ははくろ, and ほくそ seem possibly useful today only as etymology.

Suggest splitting med/col senses the same way we did for 脇芽. I misspoke on another entry saying こくし was [ok] here. Still, it is quite a bit rarer than the ngrams suggest, and maybe only appears as a medical term. A couple of refs at least support this, and sankoku does not have こくし at all.

====
As a complete aside, I am wondering if Japan even has the "beauty mark" concept, which raises interesting glossing questions.

I found "モテるほくろ", which seems to be a bit of a neologism. And this interesting headline (suggesting the answer to my question is "no"):
フランスでは、ホクロは美しさを引き立てるための道具だ。

Actors engage in Monoimi (purification through fasting and abstention) called Bekka (literally, "separate fire," during which they cook with sacred fire, avoiding unclean fire used by others, particularly women) for a period of time.

https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/物忌み
斎戒に同じ (we gloss 斎戒 as "purification").
具体的には、肉食や匂いの強い野菜の摂取を避け、他の者と火を共有しないなどの禁止事項がある。日常的な行為をひかえることには、自らの穢れを抑える面と、来訪神 (まれびと)などの神聖な存在に穢れを移さないためという面がある。
Wikipedia further says the modern prescription is:
「潔斎して身体を清め、衣服を改め、居室を別にし、飲食を慎み、思念、言語、動作を正しくし、汚穢、不浄に触れてはならない」

From the evening of March first the gūji (head priest) and shinshoku (shrine priests) enter into a period of monoimi (purificatory abstinence)

Monoimi (物忌み): To stay confined in one’s home for a certain period of time to avoid calamity.

In addition, these texts explain days designated as "monoimi" (days of taboo), during which one must sequester themselves at home in order to avoid misfortune.
  Comments:
sankoku(one combined sense): 食事や行い、また、外出を慎んで、体が汚れないようにする (avoid impurities)

Maybe this has some limited ritualistic practice in modern times, but this appears to be mostly a Heian period activity. Makes an appearance in the Tale of Genji, which increases its visibility.

For sense[2], references are consistent in specifying a period of time, not necessarily a single day. "Sequestering to one's house" can, it seems, be a part of sense[1], but to the extent that 物忌み is specifically about staying home on unlucky days, seems to be an onmyoudo related activity. We have lots of xrefs to 陰陽道 for practices related to it.

I like the first ref's suggestion of "abstention" over "abstinence". All sources I've seen seem to indicate a much broader restriction on activities (and human interaction) than the nuance of "abstinence" would seem to imply. It's also a short-term restriction during ritual periods (not the long-term nuance often associated with abstinence)

Oops, I didn't mean to actually press the "delete" checkbox, I meant to actually add the gloss "honkie". I think both "whitey" and "honkie"
should be in here, regardless of what happens to the くろんぼ entry.

I think it should stay. I suggest dropping "whitey" to retain a bit of balance with 黒んぼ.

I was going to re-submit this for deletion based on the first page of google results that's all jmdict spawn, but I see on twitter there's
actually a fair amount of real, derogatory usage. e.g. "それ80年くらい前に、自力でやろうと、ベトナム封鎖してミャンマー封鎖して包囲しようとしたら白ん
ぼ国家にボコボコにされた国があるらしい。" (Sep 26)
(I'm not adding "honkie" here to "make a point" re: the discussion on くろんぼ btw, just to be clear)

木っ葉天狗 is from koj 6th ed.
Daijr doesn't have 木っ葉 for こっぱ so I assumed that 木っ端天狗 was an IME selection error from when the entry was submitted.
But if 木っ葉/こっぱ is in koj, I suppose we can include both forms.

除目
じもくじょもく
1. [n]
▶ ceremony for appointing officials other than ministers (from the Heian period)

History:

  Comments:
the entry in 漢字源 (the ref used above) for 除目 has both readings, but used in different senses:
[除目]
ジョモク--官職を与えることを記した詔書。
ジモク--[日本]平安時代、大臣以外の役人を諸官職に任命した儀式。

じもく is definitely the right first headword here. nikk/wiki also have じょもく as synonymous so including as a second reading

Nikk, daijs, daijr and koj all have じもく. Wiki has じもく/じょもく.
