Comments: | yeah, it's not really a 'crown'. and also 'i crowned him' means 'i hit him in the head', which was my first reaction when i saw 'crowning a boy'. but i can't think of a better word how about 'crowning a boy with a traditional Japanese cap' or something? also, i'll bet this is mostly archaic. it's in my kogo jiten at any rate |

Comments: | My current anime translates as "mage", and that seems like a useful fit to me. eijiro marks as "dated"〈古〉, but that seems a bit silly as "mage" is quite common in the English genres where this term might be used. (role playing games, historical fantasy, etc.) The fact that it's used in a recently produced/translated anime kind of makes that point for me (Frieren). I believe "mage" was a character class way back in Final Fantasy I for the NES in the late 80s. I'd also note in favor of this term, none of the other terms here would work particularly well as a substitute in this scenario. magician has modern slight-of-hand connotations. Wizards are men, witches are women, and sorcerer's are a bit too over-the-top powerful in a society with a lot of general "everyday" magic. |

The point of the rK as I see it isn't to say "this kanji might as well not have been included in this entry at all, it's completely pointless" but to tell esp. early learners that it's quite rare and that they don't need to bother learning it by heart to feel they "know" the word in question, and also to provide guidance for reverse lookups. It's not to say they won't ever, in a lifetime of reading Japanese, possibly come across it or find reason to use it. Since we do mention it in a note on sense 2, and considering these ngrams, I'm OK with removing it, though. |

Comments: | I think the application of rK has to be percentage-based, nothing else makes sense or is actually helpful. If it's a lot more common for a particular sense than overall, I wouldn't tag it as rK though. But how common is it for sense 2? |

Comments: | Do we really want to tag a form with 34k in the ngrams as "rare"? I know it's less than 1% of 歌う's count but the difference is probably a lot smaller if you look only at sense 2 usage (詠う doesn't apply to sense 1). |

Comments: | 1) Couldn't pull up the 白板 (d: alveus) entry in the search option so I am submitting a separate entry. 2)I would suggest removing the previous definition as I haven't come up with "alveus" as a search result for that kanji in any other dictionary nor do I see the relation between the meaning of alveus (from latin: alvus - a hollow, cavity, tub, deep vessel, etc.) and the meaning of the kanji here (lit: white board/plate/plank - hardly a "deep hollow"). The closest thing I can find is 白板症 (はくばんしょう)when searching for this kanji. 3)The pronunciation of the above is up for debate. I'm simply drawing on the fact that I have heard it called はくばん in my studies of the Japanese language. Also, take this pronunciation as relative to the somewhat outdated black board 黒板 (こくばん). |
