because the signal-to-noise ratio is so crumby

if it were up to me, i'd toss most of the iK entries anyway.  iK should be used 
for common misrepresentations, not one-off henkan errors or "a handful of 
guys wrote it like this a few hundred years ago but so infrequently that writers 
of real Japanese dictionaries have never even thought of including it".  If 
writers consistently had to give yomigana so their readers could understand 
that they were using the reading じょうだん instead of しょうだん, that's a 
good sign that 笑談[じょうだん] was never in wide enough circulation to be 
relevant.

Would the mess come from the fact that there would be two entries with 笑談 as an headword ? 

I don't care about this that much, but it would make sense to me to include it as an headword since it's used to write じょうだん by a couple of different writers. 

The problem with the note is that if something is just written in a note, it won't show up when doing a search on wwwjdic. Of course, I doubt that many people will be searching for 笑談 on wwjdic, but you never know.

仕様 is irregular here. The しよう in どうしようもない is the volitional form of する, not a noun. Note that daijs has 仕様もない for しょうもない but only 如何しようも無い for どうしようもない.

One more counterpoint to myself you might also consider:
どう仕様も無い[rK]
all else [sK].

This provides all of the "reasonable" kanji for the entry (如何 excluded).  I find that it can be easier to understand a long string of kana when you unambiguously understand the associated kanji form, even if the kanji are not ordinarily used.

While it's in my previous treatise somewhere, I'll just add succinctly "I agree".  Will try for some more condensed edits going forward.

it doesn't seem that uncommon, but it fails the other prong of my test for how idiomatic something is: 'eijiro has it'.  gg5 doesn't have it either

i could go either way, leaning towards 'unneeded'

These sorts of adjective+noun formations are problematical. If they are not common and obvious from the components, my inclination is to leave them out, despite them being in Eijiro, etc. If they are very common, or have a rather idiomatic meaning, then they should go in.
