I disagree. I don't rhink the most literal

FWIW, to me it sounds very natural to use "field day" to refer to both the day and the event.

If we're including "sports day" we should have the AmE equivalent as well. I've read the discussion below and I agree with Marcus that the "day" glosses are perfectly valid.
