Comments: | For sense 1, having put in glosses such as clinking/jingling/etc. I can see no point in explaining what they mean in English. The "expl" is explain what the word means when the short gloss does not. I think jingle/jangle/etc. need nothing further. I can't see sense 2 being other than an example of "clinking" in sense 1. An onomatopoeic term for metal on something hard could be metal-on-metal, metal-on-stone, etc. I don't think we need to be bound by Kojien's literary and historical excursions. Sense 3 - again the "expl" is simply explaining what the English means. I think we should expect the user to know what coquettish/flirty/flighty mean. Sorry if I sound grumpy, but I think as far as possible glosses should stand by themselves, and "expl" should only be used when it is really necessary. The entry is very long already. |

Comments: | * Major re-write * Elab to other senses * There are many possible glosses for “cheap, flirty woman”, but I don’t think they add much; see Wikt for details: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wikisaurus:promiscuous_woman * Separate off “metal fittings in setta” as separate sense (following koj) – both daijr and koj cite this usage, so seems useful, and distinct from metal jangling against metal (confusing to try to explain both at once) (Heard on TV today, in sense of nattering) |

Comments: | Whilst I agree that the most "typical"/"normal" なた is superficially somewhat similar to a cleaver (though not nearly as broad), a fundamental defining characteristic of a cleaver is still that it is a butcher/kitchen knife. (and again, the many significant differences I mentioned before) There are many knives that a layman wouldn't be able to tell apart, just to look at them, that are nevertheless in very distinct and different categories. (the same applies to, e.g., axes) ...and many なた do not have that distinctive rectangular shape, as is clear from the references I mention. Note that 剣鉈 and 鉈鎌 are types of 鉈. |

Comments: | To me, the distinctive feature of a なた is the cleaver-like rectangular blade. (When I showed a picture several nata to my wife and asked her what she'd call them, she said "a cleaver".) |

Comments: | A cleaver is a butcher/kitchen knife. It has a completely different purpose and also possess very different blades, to a nata. A lot broader blade (a lot broader than the handle, notably) and though they are relatively thick and sturdy, they are significantly less so, than a nata. A lot of typical uses of a nata (especially splitting wood), would utterly ruin any cleaver. The closest thing to a nata, would be a machete or a hunting knife. (and ken'nata do look like the latter, as well as being used as such, in addition to its other uses) It is neither, however, so it would be wrong to call it such. The angle is notable (though not universal/required), but I guess it's not really necessary to mention. Also the blade is often of uniform breadth (basically a rectangle) aside from ken'nata (剣鉈), which have a more typical knife shape as well as usually being straight, but the same applies to that, so no need to mention it either, I suppose. Speaking of which: Adding an entry for 剣鉈 may be a good idea. |

Comments: | I don't think so, the chiebukuro link talks about confusing itameshi for ita(me)meshi. I'd like to see some actual evidence of itameshi being used with this meaning first. |

|
Comments: | I was mystified by your comments until I found the quoted chiebukuro Q/A. It seems it's confused with 炒め飯/いためめし. Not sure we should be adding it as a here with a "confused with" sense? Or perhaps a "いためし" irregular reading put on the 炒飯 entry? |
|
8. | A* 2022-06-05 17:12:46 Hendrik | |
Comments: | Not sure how to handle this in (add this to) JEDIC, but there is also a Japanese version of "itameshi" that is unrelated to Italy: 炒飯 (in Okinawa called "chaahan", from Chinese "chao3fan4"). A local NS informant tells me that many call it "yakimeshi" 焼飯, but I cannot vouch for the two terms having the same connotations (it is likely that there are regionally different ingredients and regionally different ways of making the end product that could lead to different terms being used). |

Comments: | Currently the kanji 過 has the kun-readings す.ぎる, -す.ぎる, -す.ぎ, す.ごす, あやま.つ, あやま.ち, よ.ぎる I propose changing this to す.ぎる, す.ごす, あやま.ち, あやま.つ, よ.ぎる, よぎ.る The readings -す.ぎる, -す.ぎ are redundant. (I think dashes should be reserved for readings that only are used as prefixes or suffixes, e.g. 雨: あめ, あま-, -さめ) In principle あやま.ち is redundant, but considering the n-grams (過ち 553735, 過つ 3284) I think あやま.ち is justified. And よ.ぎる, よぎ.る are two distinct readings, both of them correct. |

Comments: | Just to follow up on Rene’s comment (previous suggestion had been “venture-backed company” and “start-up company”): I do have relevant business knowledge and experience in this area, and the standard American English term for this is emphatically “start-up company/startup company”. The 和英 dictionaries that translate it as “venture” are hewing too closely to the Japanese – in American English (both business-speak and everyday speech), “venture” generally refers to the *capital*, not to the small company. (See longer comments at ベンチャービジネス.) Hope this helps! |

Comments: | perhaps close enough. there seems to be a distinction in that ぎゃっ is often the kind of yelp you'd let out when being crushed or having your foot stepped on, whereas きゃっ is merely from being startled. don't forget about きゃあ (1631770). if there's not a total merge, then at a minimum, きゃっ should probably be merged into きゃあ. |

Comments: | I see Daijirin has almost identical glosses for きゃっ and ぎゃっ. I think a merge is appropriate. |

Comments: | I came to this entry expecting to find that きゃっ meant "ouch", but instead it lists a more generic shriek or scream. So then I looked up "ouch", and I discovered that きゃっ does indeed mean "ouch", but that is listed under a separate entry for ぎゃあ; ギャー; ぎゃっ; ギャッ. Seems like these two entries could be combined, perhaps :-) |
