To be clear, what I meant by "real word" is one that has seen real use outside of fiction (such as the TV show mentioned).
There's actually a lot of real hits in google books, from 1879 and onwards. |

There raises the topic of what is a real word.
忍耐弱い isn’t a “real” word according to many Japanese.
I don’t know of a dictionary that lists it. And yet...
it’s widely used as the antonym to 忍耐強い instead of the proper 気の短い
As a word limited to the world of 花柳界, 浮名儲け was never widely used.
But for people in 花柳界, it was a “real” word. |

In the detective television show 電卓刑事,
when police question a 芸妓 about an alleged affair
she was having with a suspect, she answered
(I’m posting the official English subtitles):
芸妓：“Yosaburo Natsume is my customer. He requested me at his table several times. “
刑事：”is that all?”
芸妓：”Yes. “
刑事：”So you aren’t in a relationship with him?”
芸妓：”This is police questioning, right?”
刑事：”Yes”.
芸妓：”Then, I must tell you the truth.”

Ukina means a love rumor between a man and a woman.
Even if it’s a lie, the sensual rumor will increase your prestige in town.
