I think we should go with the form found in the dictionaries. Either way, it's obscure.
I don't think a lit gloss is helpful here. It doesn't make sense unless you explain it (at which point it's no longer literal).

imidas says "贈る人の心がこもっていれば..." which makes me think it's daijs' ② for 志, "相手のためを思う気持ち。厚意。"
but reading it as "gift" makes more sense, maybe.
if we're unsure, it's probably better to remove the [lit]

Can't figure out how to make the lit make sense, but maybe that's alright.
"ambition is a pine needle" is prob a little misleading
