Looking at various hanafuda rulebooks (post- and pre-war), 空素 is actually the most common kanji for this word.
空巣 is mentioned here https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/八八 (attributed to 淡路まもる編『花札の遊び方』 昭和56)
