  Comments:
there's no mention of "sacred ground" in daij for the
second sense and it seems to overlap needlessly with the
first sense (as that can also refer to a grotto or a
cave). since gg5 doesn't split senses I think "a narrow
sanctified [mysterious] cavern [grotto]" may make sense
there, but not here.
_
gg5 may have "大仏などの内部に入ること" but the keyword here
seems to me to be "潜り". daijs says "くぐり抜ける" (daijr:
"潜り入る")

they all seem to refer to the 1st sense.

やっと潜れるほどの洞穴。名勝や霊地に多い。
  Comments:
i see quite a few images of caves and all the ones i checked referred to the cave itself. not sure why the 'sacred ground' comment was removed

they call this 胎内めぐり at Kiyomizudera in Kyoto, but you
enter a small underground grotto.
this seems to be one of the most famous examples and you
walk through a 茅の輪

first few hits on google concern the religious meaning so I
switched senses.
