旺文社、古語辞典、303:
横風を受けて帆走させるために、帆を一方に片寄らせて張ること。
Richard H. Dana, Jr, The Seaman's Friend: A Treatise on Practical Seamanship, 103, "close-hauled. Applied to a vessel which is sailing with her yards braced up so as to get as much as possible to windward. The same as on a taut bowline, full and by, on the wind, &c."
  Comments:
Many modern descriptions of 片帆 discuss this point of sail to show that traditional Japanese boats were not as awkward to sail upwind as is commonly thought.
