Very confusing term – when この頃 is read as このころ it means *past*, just the same as その頃（そのころ）, and different from この頃 （このごろ）, which means *present*.
This was discussed in class (in an essay, この頃 was written, referring to the past, and teacher made a point of this), and seems rather literary. |
