hatena does say it's from セックス+lacrosse, but it's not as if that's a reliable source. It could even just be a joke entry.

The references I found are stating that it comes from the game, with the first reference explicitly speaking against the lacrosse origin
Also from the short search I did I couldn't find references to it being treated as a sport

Any suggestions, Marcus? It seems the game was around in 1986 and was probably the original coinage.
