Wordreference defines as:
(descend by grasping) (手足を使って)降りる 自動
這い降りる
This explains its application to trees (one of the yourei examples), ladders, and cliffs. I imagine this is why 這 is present (else 降りる alone suffices as "climb down").
Note: in our definition for 這い登る, "with hands and feet" isn't even parenthetical, it is literally:
"to climb with hands and feet"
This is [rare] in comparison to 這い登る "crawl up", no doubt because it is quite hard to actually crawl in the downward direction. |
