I agree with Rene that "coprophagous insects" is pushing it a bit far. All my refs say 糞虫 refers to a range of quite specific beetles. I think thr original gloss should stay.

daijr, koj explicitly specify beetles for sense 1 (scarabs and closely related families). koj: 成虫・幼虫が動物の糞を食うコガネムシ科の甲虫の一群。 daijr: コガネムシ科や近縁の甲虫のうちで、成虫や幼虫が糞を食べる習性をもつものの総称。

my english dictionary defines 'dung beetle' as exactly that definition:
==
a beetle whose larvae feed on dung, esp. a scarab. The larger kinds place the dung in a hole before the eggs are laid, and some of them roll it along in a ball.
[Superfamily Scarabaeoidea, in particular families Scarabaeidae and Geotrupidae.]
==
relevant google image hits are exclusively beetles, from what i can tell
  Comments:
original gloss of 'dung beetle' was more accurate

I might very well be missing something (as this entry has been
discussed before), but this is what I gather from daijs
