Already has a good xref. [rare] = don't use if you have no reason to. Interesting comments on the old forked entry about being told explicitly to use this form, I wonder what the specific rationale ended up being in that case.
3 hits on all of wikipedia. My guess is historic legal/technical phrasing.
One of the three wikipedia references was to "Kyoto and Osaka serial robbery-murder case" using the murder weapon:

In a text i recently translated i had used 回転式拳銃 (my choice for "revolver"), but the client's editor - someone who i have a good reason to believe is knowledgeable about such matters - suggested that this should be replaced with 回転弾倉式拳銃 in each case. |
