Comments: | Significantly elaborate – many shades of meaning, as per 国語辞書 Basic sense is “initiate (in esoteric Buddhism)”, which in Japan means “Tendai & Shingon”, but it’s also a specific rank, term of respect, and specific activities. Heard in conversation (yes, really), referring to a marathon monk who’d completed the 回峰行 circuit twice (酒井雄哉 as it turns out). (Sense was “honorific”/“engaged in austerities”.) |
