Comments: | 台湾語 is used, on Taiwan and in Japan, to refer to the dominant domestic language, the Taiwanese dialect of Amoy Hokkien or Min nan hua (as opposed to Mandarin, which is the language of education and the government--though Taiwanese is now taught in school, too.) Designating 台湾語 as a dialect is a political, not a linguistic, statement, since 台湾語、 Hakka, Mandarin, and the various other Chinese languages are mutually unintelligible. |
