I agree that "GW" shouldn't be a gloss. It's a clunky way of handling the issue.
See comments on 2718850 for discussion about abbr on acronyms/initialisms. Although I said an argument could be made for including it on Japanese-made acronyms, I'm not sure it's a good argument. For the sake of consistency it's probably best not to use abbr for any acronyms/initialisms. I note that daijr and daijs don't define "GW" as "ゴールデンウイークの略".

I think we've decided that Japanese-made initialisms should get the abbr tag.
(though my actual preference would be to tag all initialisms as abbr)

Having "GW" as a gloss is useful for look-ups, but so would be including "KY" in the KY entry, because the exact same issue Jim described will come up there. ultimately it's a problem that I really don't think we should be handling on the gloss level.
