Remove “read between the lines” gloss – that’s at best an inexact translation, and certainly shouldn’t be the first one.
This expression is about reading a *situation*, the *atmosphere* (the feel), not inferring *meaning* of what is being *said* (as in “read between the lines”)
行間を読む is the equivalent phrase for “read between the lines” – it’s the literal equivalent and is used with the same sense. We don’t link similarly *meaning* terms, so I’m not linking it, though if it’s confusing enough perhaps it should be linked. |
