Sorry, I hadn't twigged you proposed dropping 針眼 as well as みず. As it's in all the kokugos I think it's best in its own "arch" entry. |

The entry is much cleaner and easier to read without it. If the inclusion of an archaic form introduces a lot of restr tags, I think it should be split out into a separate arch entry or dropped entirely (my preferred option). |

I think みず can stay with a tag. It's in the kokugos, and removing it doesn't simplify the glosses. |

みず appears to be archaic. I think it should be split out. Most of the restr tags can then be dropped.
しんこう is only in the unabridged edition of nikk. I think we can drop it. |

shouldn't the 2nd meaning, "hole," at least be included here,
even if the kanji 穴 isn't? It's in the daijs entry for 針孔,
plus the other sources I quoted (that say it's dialectal). |

The dominant words here are "穴/あな/hole", which is VERY common and "針孔/めど/eye of a needle", which is not nearly as common. めど may well be an alternative reading for 穴, but bringing 穴 into this entry and tying to the second, rarer sense is making rather a mess.
Better:
(a) keep 穴 away from here;
(b) add めど to the 穴/あな entry as an "also read ..." on the first sense. I don't want to add it as a full reading as it would have to crossed off 8 of the 9 senses.
That way we don't have a heap of restrictions and possible confusion.
I'll set that up and we can see how it looks. |

め‐ど【針孔/穴】
1 針の、糸を通すあな。はりのみみ。2 穴。
it's probably in nikk too, but since I can only see the 3
first results, I can't get to that particular entry.
けつ‐めど【尻穴】 is also in nikk
on this blog, the author says めど is dialectal (fukushima)
for hole.

What is the source for 穴 being read めど? I can't find it anywhere.
I think it best this change be dropped, and at most an "also read めど" note put on 穴/あな, but I'm not at all convinced it's needed. |

針孔, 針眼 and はりめど seem like they don't have the 2nd sense.
maybe that should be split out? now that I've made it a bit
messier... |
