The mistaken names "betel palm" and "betel nut" comes from the fact that in Asian countries the nuts of the areca palm are wrapped in leaves of the betel plant (蒟醤) when used as stimulans. (I learned that in Taiwan but found references - for the record - that support this in enough detail.) |
