Comments: | I think rich/glamorous should be different senses. sense 2 & 3 could possibly be merged, though. |

Refs: | The "wealthy socialite" gloss was added by Adam Rice, a respected JE translator, in 2007. He quoted a passage from the Wiki page (now removed): 現在、日本ではセレブと略され、金持ち、優雅、高級、などの意味合いで誤用されている。 and from the gogen-allguide.com entry: セレブの意味が曖昧なまま広まったため、単にお金持ちになることやブランド品を身につけることも「セレブになる」などと表現されるようになった。 He added: "On Japanese television, "セレブ" seems to be almost exclusively used in the sense of "Wealthy socialite" rather than the original English sense of the word. I have even seen the term used to refer to New York socialites (unfortunately I don't have a reference for that)." I think it can be covered by a simple addition to the new sense #2. |

Refs: | "《名ノナ》有名人。また、裕福な人。転じて、高級そうなこと。 「―な服」 ▷ celebrity から。" google definition - unsure where it's from originally. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/セレブリティ#日本語のセ% E3%83%AC%E3%83%96 "日本のテレビや雑誌メディアはセレブと略し、金持ち、優雅な、高級な、などの意味合いで使用している。" The absolute majority of times when I hear somebody use the word セレブ they aren't actually referring to celebrities. |
