OK, I can see the case for keeping it. I agree that "whether it is true or not" is ambiguous (although not wrong). I think this is clearer. |

I think set phrases like this are useful
to have. I agree with Rene though that our
gloss (at least alone) is not great--it's
ambiguous. When I first read it, I thought
it meant "regardless of whether it's true
or not". |

it seems to be a bit of a set phrase, but i wonder if this is true of all X+NOT_Xのほど
if it's kept, it doesn't mean "whether it's true or not", it means "the extent to which [something is] true or false". because the translation is not particularly idiomatic and obvious/literal, i'd be inclined to delete it |

On the other hand, it's been there for nearly 20 years, it's reasonably common, it's in 2 Tanaka sentences, several GG5 examples, Eijiro, Readers+, etc. While we might not add it now, I don't really think it needs to be removed.
Since Robin and I tend to be on contrasting sides of this sort of discussion I'd be interested in what others think too. |

I don't think we need this. There are many nouns which can be used with this sense of ほど. |
