Rene said in 2012: "'western Japan' itself is vague, so i don't see the need for a note saying that the term is vague."
but the current expl makes it seem as if it's not vague at all but very non-ambiguous, which I think gives the wrong
impression.

I think either "west of the ... tectonic line" or "Chubu and
westwards" is fine ("not clearly defined" was perhaps
superfluous and could of course be left out), but I think
mentioning Chubu is a lot more helpful, as 1) the term is
most frequently not used in the strictly geological sense,
2) a lot more people will be familiar with the Chubu region
than the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line. It's just not as
helpful. Though I wouldn't mind a 2nd [geol] sense that
could be the "west of the fault line" gloss.

'western Japan' itself is vague, so i don't see the need for a note saying that the term is vague. daijr offers the geological definition, which corresponds very well with what i consider to be the west-east division from a practical standpoint: the separation of the power grids into 60Hz and 50 Hz. daijisen agrees in their definition for 糸魚川静岡構造線: 東北日本と西南日本の境目
