I did sawanobori one time, in 1988. I was invited to join some Japanese friends one weekend. There was no gorge; i.e. there were no steep walls on either side of us.
The terrain was more like in the photo of sawanobori at the top of the following page.

That's not sawanobori.
We all bought straw sandals (草鞋) in the nearest town before we started the climb. That was the traditional footwear used to give a more secure footing clambering
over wet rocks when pursuing this sport/recreation. (Nowadays people wear special sawanobori shoes with felt soles apparently -- 渓流シューズ or 渓流足袋.)
