By the way, on the issue of whether 稼働 can refer to a *person* doing work, there *is* a definition out there on the Web which is quoted here
http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/leaf/jn2/43211/m0u/
and here
http://kotobank.jp/word/稼働
, for example, which indicates that it can refer to a person:
か‐どう 【稼働/稼動】
[名](スル)
1 かせぎはたらくこと。仕事をすること。就労。「―人口」「―日数」
2 機械を運転すること。また、機械が動いて仕事をすること。「最新鋭機が―している」
.
But I think it's wrong! It doesn't square with the usage I've seen, or with definitions in other sources
(with the exception of GG5's entry 稼働時間 "the number of hours worked")
.
According to the Kotobank definition I just quoted, 稼働人口 is an example of usage of the first sense of 稼働.
However, in Google, that term only comes up on the Web in dictionary websites, etc., and it has a very low n-grams count:
Google n-gram counts
.
At the very least, Kotobank definition #1 seems inappropriate as the *first* sense in the definition.
My feeling is that it may be simply incorrect. |

I'm the one who suggested adding "(person)", but on reexamining my references (GG5 and Luminous), I see that there is nothing there that indicates that it refers to people rather than equipment, machinery, etc.
.
I have also checked here:
http://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=稼働時間
and here:
and I still don't find anything to suggest that this is a reference to hours worked by a person.
.
I think, then, that "person" is probably wrong, and that "number of hours worked" is misleading to have in the definition, especially at the head of the definition.
.
The Linguee reference above suggests "uptime" is a good gloss, and so does リーダーズ+プラス:
úp・tìme ━n 《コンピューターなどの》稼働時間 |
