I'd prefer the glosses the other way round, but it's not a big issue. |

OK, I don't mind dropping "Chinese".
My only problem with leading with "kanji dictionary" is that it's too broad.
I agree that GG5 has the best explanatory gloss. |

I agree with Rene. We don't need to explain what a kanji is in this entry. |

I don't think calling them "Chinese characters" is helpful. AFAIK, we don't shy away from calling them "kanji" anywhere else in the dictionary. In particular, I can't see any reason to mix and match terms with a gloss like "Chinese characters and kanji compounds".
I think "Chinese-Japanese character dictionary" is likewise unhelpful. Any time you hyphenate a dictionary, e.g., "French-English dictionary", people expect that the dictionary contains glosses from one language to the other.
If an explanation is desired, I can't see how we can improve on GG5's:
漢和辞典 a (Japanese) kanji [character] dictionary; a dictionary providing Japanese definitions of kanji and kanji compounds.
Perhaps:
* kanji dictionary; Japanese dictionary of kanji and kanji compounds. |

I have no problem with "kanji dictionary" as a gloss but I think the best option is to explain what it is. There shouldn't be any confusion this way. |

"Chinese Character-Japanese dictionary" may be better as it specifies the target
language as Japanese. Kanji dictionaries may also include kanji-English
dictionaries (漢英字典), cf http://www.kanji.org/kanji/index.htm |

i think the existing gloss is also confusing, as is the xref. the clearest solution is just to avoid talking about Chinese |

I have many kanwas and apart from a couple of specialized ones, they are not based on "Classical Chinese" and do not have "examples [...] drawn from kanbun". They just use typical kango. I don't think that proposed second gloss is either accurate or necessary. |

漢和辞典 are organized around kanji but also includes kanji compounds, and examples are usually drawn from kanbun (Classical Chinese as read in Japanese). So the
"character dictionary" part may not be accurate |
