meikyo (entry for 両刃の剣):
近年「もろはのけん」「りょうばのつるぎ」ともいうが、本来は「もろはのつるぎ」。
両刃 can be read もろは or りょうば, and 剣 can be read つるぎ or けん in this expression.
We can probably merge the entries together |

kokugos, online articles, and n-grams all seem to concur that these are synonymous, up-to-and-including metaphoric usage, but the other form is preferable.
This was not previously marked as [exp], but the xref is. Even though the metaphors align perfectly with English (or especially because they do), would it be appropriate to give an explanatory gloss?
As entered currently, it is not possible to know if these terms are safe to use in the English metaphorical way without looking it up somewhere else. |
