Refs: | - sankoku has 端たない as a headword (wrapped in its '仮名書き可' parentheses) - shinmeikai has this word as a subentry in its entry for はした【端た】 - obunsha has 端ない as a headword - iwakoku states directly that this is 「端」の形容詞化。 None of these refs say it is ateji or a special reading / jukujikun. Comments: | Since the 国語s are quiet on it being an ateji, I think I'll put it in a note, and close it. |

Comments: | Sorry, I meant [iK], not [oK]. Definitely irregular, not obsolete. I can find quite a few recent examples of "端ない" on Twitter. |

Comments: | is there any evidence that this is "obsolete"? (i.e., is there any evidence it used to be a thing in the past but is no longer? the uses i'm seeing online don't seem to come from old sources) i think ateji makes more sense -- also, 端たない seems to be more common than 端ない, since 端ない looks to get a lot more false positives. -- overall i get <200 "real" google hits for both headwords combined (many/most of which don't seem to be real), which raises the question of whether it's worth recording at all, or if it's just a henkan error and should be iK |

Comments: | i guess we can keep it as ateji or oK then. i would have thought maybe henkan error, but that's unlikely to show up in multiple sources (one hopes) |

Refs: | 中辞典 (has 端たない as headword.) JWN (possibly from JMdict). Goi Taikei and the JLD have it too |
|
Comments: | Rene also puzzled over it a bit in 2009 (old logs) when he recommended the ateji tag for it. As well as being in 中辞典 it's in the Ichiman reference, but parenthesized (《端たない》). It's also in a small JE that came with my old EB copy of Daijirin as 端ない. I think it probably should stay; either as ateji or oK. |

Comments: | Like Rene, I'm puzzled by the [ichi1] tag. 端たない only gets a few dozen Google hits once you click through to the 4th page of results. I'm in favour of dropping it. 端ない is more common but I think it needs an [oK] tag. |

Comments: | none of mine either... it's not even mentioned in a note in any of the dics. is the kanji really ichi1? |
