Comments: | The following example doesn't sound quite right if you substitute "went on a platform" for "took the podium". . "A smiling Wen Jiabao took the podium at the Waldorf Astoria ..." . It would read as follows: "A smiling Wen Jiabao went on a platform at the Waldorf Astoria ..." . Also, I don't think it's just *any* sort of platform; I think it's typically an 演壇 (rostrum; podium). See following examples from jukuu.com: . 1) The Prime Minister mounted the platform. 2) Entertainment.Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach joined Gates onstage to talk about the momentum for Xbox. 3)My claim to fame around Microsoft is that I was the guy on stage with Bill Gates giving a presentation during the Seattle earthquake in February. |
