I think it's probably the original meaning but as the JEs indicate in now usually means embezzlement, etc.

So it seems to me there's a narrow meaning of this word (misappropriation; stealing someone's dropped wallet; finders, keepers; etc.) that is widely used and commonly understood, and there's a broad meaning ("covertly doing something malicious" is how Wiktionary describes it) that is closer to the word's etymological origin.
The question is whether or not we should mention the broad meaning of the word. We could add a note or additional gloss to the first sense or create a second sense. (Personally, I don't have any strong feelings either way.) |

All kokugo have some variation of 悪いことをして知らん顔をする and this is also an explanation of the etymology. This is obviously not the same thing as "embezzlement" - where's the 知らん顔 part? And why is 悪いこと such a specific thing? |
