| Comments: | The most popular usage of this word refers exactly to the cloth being wrapped around the chest of a woman (or the belly of a man), as suggested overwhelmingly by a Google Image search of either "sarashi" or "さらし". While the word fundamentally refers to the cloth itself, a nice definition is incomplete without an explicit reference to this particular garment. There could also be a cross-reference to 腹巻き; however, that word refers to the male usage. "さらし" is used perhaps as a euphemism for the more on-the-nose female "むねつぶし" (no entry in JMDict) (for modern clothing "sports bra" is more common). |
