This was mentioned in the past but those dates aren't strictly correct (e.g. for Okinawa).
What is strange about "East Asian"? |

Its important to point out this doesn't refer to any rainy period but specifically the one that happens in the summer in East Asia. This is a mistake early learners often make, calling other rainy seasons in other countries 梅雨 (instead of the general term 雨季 ) |

A more precise gloss would be "rainy season (in East Asia from May to August)", but the current gloss seems more relevant in a Japanese dictionary. |

I realise non-Japan application of the term is rare; I'm just making the point that there's no need to spell it out too much. The 国語s mention the period, so I suppose there's no harm. |

i think the edit was mostly correct though maybe not glossed the best. like africa and indonesia in the table here have a "rainy season", but it wouldn't normally be called 梅雨:

I'm not convinced.
Wikipedia, both English and Japanese, describes it as a local weather phenomenon that affects China, Japan and Korea.
I do not get any ngram hits for <country>の梅雨, except for 中国の梅雨.
The dates are taken from Wikipedia and apply to Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. |

It's not limited to Japan - you can find <country>の梅雨 being used. No JE I have checked mentions the months. |
