Do we need "one's lines" when the first gloss is already "line"? I think the qualifier "one's" can lead to confusion. I'm sure it's correct in that an actor etc. could use it to refer specifically to their lines, but this isn't usage that dominates, it's usually about the lines of a fictional character (as most people just aren't actors).
(I removed the gloss once in 2021 but Robin added it back) |

科白 is still valid for せりふ. I suggesting splitting because the definition for かはく is slightly different.
I don't think "speech bubble" is right. It can refer to the words within speech bubbles but that's sense 1. |

Good analysis, and I agree with that outcome. I suspect セリフ is primarily associated with speech balloons in manga.
I wonder if it should be in its own sense with a "usu. セリフ" note? I'll approve this, then reopen it for possible future discussion. |

I don't disagree, but an images search for セリフ brings a lot of manga panels with speech bubbles, and only a handful of font-related images
-
for comparison, サンセリフ (antonym of sorts) gets only 201 n-grams. it seems very unlikely that the japanese talk much about concepts in western typography when they have their own ゴシック体 and 明朝体 -- at least not 130k n-grams' worth. |

I think the inclusion of セリフ in this entry is dubious. It was added in 2009 anonymously with no references. All my checking shows セリフ = serif, i.e. another entry. The counts are sure to be from there. |
